Solo teams past and present (and duos if you see this)

Hey folks,

On the off chance any of you have time to be on the forum in the lead up, who has done/is doing this solo? None of my team mates are available this year so I'm doing it solo. I've done it 3 or so times as a duo before, but never fully solo.

Horror stories? Advantages? If you did it solo, how did you do your writing process/make decisions? Share your films if you want, too :)

Please do it! Well recommended- I was so pleased with how much I pushed myself last year, particularly the editing to make it look like there was lots of me.

It is really cool to see your own limitations. I found I could also edit as I went, without having to explain anything to anyone.

There were some tough moments early on, like 3am Friday when I realised that nothing was working well, but I pushed through it and got into a flow. Filmed it all on my phone as well.

Oh I watched yours last year, I was super impressed! I'm trying to learn some animation as a backup in case I can't think of anything decent live action-wise.

Are you doing ultra? Considering it, but not too sure, haha.

Oh cool thanks! I'm not doing Ultra this year as I am only supporting school teams, but another definite recommendation! Both times I reckon Ultra has actually made my films better.

I'll be mostly-solo for the first 18 hours, then in a duo for the remaining 30. Much the same as last year, although this year we'll be in the same place (last year we made our movie over Skype and Creative Cloud). Signed up for Ultra both times.

Last year was maybe my best year ever in the comp, both in terms of the experience and the resultant film. We don't know whether we'll be animating or shooting live-action this year, but we're both really looking forward to doing it again! Solo and duo are both rewarding in vastly different ways from big-team 48hours. You keep each other accountable, and there's no room for slacking off. You also get a sense of calm when there are just a couple people working that you'd never get in a team of ten people.

The years that I've done duo it's been me and my partner and we both brainstorm, then I write, film, direct, edit and he acts so it's like a solo effort with an extra brain and set of arms on deck to help do things, but have never attempted to be the main actor too, haha.

I LOVED Utka, it was one of my favorites from those I saw of last year. Especially loved the Russian accent :) Was part of my inspiration for considering animating this year, except I planned to dabble in it waaaay earlier than 3 days before the comp, lol. Life had other plans! Oh well, this time last year I'd never written a musical and I pulled that off (as in completed it--it's no masterpiece, haha). Anything's possible I guess!

I've done it six or seven times as a duo - though technically as I use my son as an actor we've been a trio the last few years, a distinction that was hard to stomach when he was one and two, but easier since last year when he really brought it on shoot day and made things all kinds of fun.

I'd kind of like to try it, but I think two is my real minimum, even though of course we've seen a number of people really nail it going solo over the years. For me I think it'd be too big a sacrifice, as then I'd have to use pre-made music rather than composing our own score and songs, which has been an important part of our enjoyment of making our more recent shorts.

It's also really great to have someone help sanity test my ideas, and she provides immeasurable help during the edit, keeping track of everything that's done, helping cut shots that we don't have time for, and of course making all the music.

Also making a short with my wife (and now our son) is pretty much the only reason I still do this thing that otherwise causes so much unnecessary stress.

We are doing duo for the first time this year. Just me and my husband. We are also going to have a go at animation - eek!

It already feels quite liberating not having to organise a whole team!

Wow, this should be a blast! Check out Squint Eastwood/Sam Harris films, he manages animation on a solo/duo team. I'm sure he would be up for giving some tips!

Going solo again this year. Last (and first) time I did solo/duo I signed up at the very last minute. I had every intention of skipping that year.

Ended up giving animation a go and ended up making LOVE.EXE, came third place in the finals.

Best part of going solo: you don't have to write a script, just make it up as you go...

Highly recommend it.

LOVE.EXE was amazing, yeah sometimes good things come out of additional pressure/constraints, so we'll see what happens! I signed up for Ultra in the end, if nothing else I thought it might help me narrow down my options a bit more tonight when I'm writing alone, haha.

Still undecided on animation vs. live action, hopefully the genre/elements/ultra combo will push me in one direction. I'm quite intrigued by the idea of not having to leave my office if I do animation (no batteries, no lugging gear around, no locations...) but we'll see!

__Missed this thread earlier.
First time solo and I had a blast. Not having to discuss ideas by committee really sped things up - though I had nobody to talk me out of ludicrous ideas. Hope everyone made it in on time!

Went solo in the end and did animation, was a totally different process basically writing friday night then editing for 2 whole days instead of heading out for a shoot, haha. Also signed up for Ultra at the last minute so yeah, split screen animation required a bit of thought!

The pain is real with the not having anyone to talk you out of ludicrous ideas, haha. I had one late night phone call to my partner who was away in Auckland who I told my idea to and he told me what was dumb but not how to fix it, lol, and then I refined a bit from there and just made whatever in the end, haha. I had fun though and learned a lot about animation in the process!

Handed in on time so that's a pretty good bit of sugar on top. Was fighting off a cold the whole way too though, so now I have finally woken up actually sick. At least I made it through the weekend first!

I was pretty much entirely solo this year, apart from three small suggestions from my partner as she was sick so couldn't help otherwise.

The whole film in split-screen animation was a pain in the ass! So much extra work to put it all together. I like the solo/duo thing as it does save time and organisation and animation saves on travel times and weather restraints, available light etc. This year was all hand drawn (computer based) for me, rather than lego. Used a combination of Photoshop design and drawing, character animator for lip-sync, after effects for compositing and fx and premiere for the editing.

2019 "The Drop" - Secret Identity - ULTRA SOLOish
2018 "Furry" - The Wish Movie - ULTRA DUO - Heat 3 runner up Audience Favourite

2011 "Playin the Game" - Mystery
