Solo/Duo Teams!

Where my solo/duo teams at?

I tried to put together a team up here in Canada, but since the comp starts at 3am Thursday night, it's tough. So I'm thinking of going solo for my first year back in the competition, because that seems an appropriate level of insanity for an ex-manager. (There's also an award for solo/duo teams this time, which is nice.)

Lone stars and double troubles: what process are you going to follow? You gonna animate? Puppeteer? Play all the roles yourself, Taika style? Cut something together out of public domain footage? Make a film with no humans in it? I'm considering all of the above...

Seriously though, I'm so pleased this is being acknowledged this year. Solo/duo teams work crazy hard to make a 48hours film!

It's a wonderful feeling when you go to bed reliant on someone else doing something for you in 48 and they deliver the goods in a big way. Onto sound!

Man, I'm shot. Worked till 6am this morning then up at 7:30am and we just got in with about 15 minutes to spare.

The AK hand in seemed really empty so I don't know if a lot of people missed the deadline or were just so early that they'd left again?

Shot is right. Had a harder time of it than last year, hit the sack at 5. Feeling it quite a bit now. :)

Didn't end up trying to claim to be a duo team, even though we bloody clearly are one.

You and your partner do it, with a small kid right? I feel for you not technically being a duo since it's probably technically harder for you with a little one in tow than just a regular duo!

We had a bigger team this year, ended up with 2 kids in tow and my sister, but all just actors still, so this year felt just as intense as the years my partner and I did duo, since I had to manage 7 other people and still do everything apart from the acting, lol. The hardest part is not having a single moment where you're resting because someone else is in charge of doing this bit, haha. But good fun still :)

It's always really interesting seeing the makeup of different teams. Like the ones with 25 people in them, I just wonder how they manage the complexity, haha.

Yeah it's good fun. Ironically it was probably our hardest year with him.

Those giant teams give me the shits when it comes to audience favourite though, as it's the only semi-realistic sort of kudos for most teams, so you go in there with your high hopes and your normal size team and in rolls like 50 people from one team and it's sort of... what the fuck is this? I'd kind of like it if there were a limited number of votes somehow.

Entered as a Solo team this year, but then Ultra suggested I use a child, so it was down to me and my 4 month old boy. Was very challenging, particularly because I like to stay loyal to the type of films I like to make, but good to stretch the demographic. Hardest I ever worked on a 48hours. On the plus side, no trying to explain my ideas to anyone or driving cast/crew around, or asking people to help with moving stuff. Just got on with it. Well recommended for 48hour veterans- you will be amazed by what you can achieve. Next year? Might try to organise a school team or 2. I have a year to train children to become mini mad scientists.

couldn't agree more - even though we had a tough time with our genre as a duo it was wonderful not to have to:

1. try to explain an idea to everyone
2. stop our desperate mates from making the female talent feel awkward AF
3. tell everyone repeatedly to shut up while we tried to record audio
4. force everyone out of the edit booth so we could focus on the saturday night

We definitely worked harder than we ever had, but it was also a lot less stressful than any 48hours I've done.

100% this, last year our biggest school teams all got into kahoots with each other and said we'll vote for yours second if you vote for ours, so they got their own 12-15 votes, plus each others 12-15 votes, and of course, came out as #1 and #2 audience favorite. Almost feels like audience favorite should be done at the finals and only people who aren't in a team can vote, haha.

Nah as you say, a fixed number of votes would be good, and not weighted. Each team gets like 5 votes and you have to pick 5 different films. Something like that, fill out a form for your team, hand it back.

Audience favourite vote rigging has always been a potential issue, like the voting on the reviews site where people think it affects the outcome so they purposefully vote films down or up. Hilariously though one year we were accused of this but there was only two of us there so I guess people just liked what we made.

It is what it is and for us, we're just happy to have fun making a film and hand something in on time. Anything on top of that is just gravy. Not to say we don't want to win but half the time I don't understand what the judges were thinking when they chose some films so try not to get too caught up in it :)

I have a similar thought about our heat this year - we are in Christchurch #2 and there are 4 Ara Institute teams in the same heat....

...unless there’s enough rivalry there that they counter block vote in my direction!!!
