So Ant wants teams to take more risks this year. What do you think that looks like?

There's been a call for teams to take some bloody risks this year. I'd be interested to know what people actually interperet this to mean? Make weirder films? Attempt greater feats?
What do you guys think?

From the perspective of someone who watches a few dozen 48HOURS films every year, I think a film that takes risks is probably going to be a film in which unexpected things happen. It'll be a film that genuinely surprises you, be it in a memorably bizarre performance, a crazy pivot in the story, some trippy visual choice, or whatever.

Either that, or it'll be a complete trainwreck, because it flew too close to the sun in the pursuit of cinematic glory.

I think the TBALC is a great example of a team that takes risks. I've been following you guys for a while, and each year it's something refreshing and different.

Things that are low risk in my mind are:

- Repetition of conflict and resolution with a twist ending
- Using the same actors in the same roles every year (a lot of pro teams are guilty of this)
- Writing a 'good enough' story that relies more on acting and production instead of story
- Trying to replicate success from previous years' films with a formula
- Following basic camera rules

There's nothing worse than watching 48Hour Film made by an apathetic team.

Just curious, what do you consider to be the sin committed here? A lot of teams probably only have a couple of actors at the ready. Or are you pointing out that the same actors keep playing similar characters instead of expanding their range?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was referring to relying on actors strengths over writing. I get that a lot of teams including my own only have access to a few actors at most but that's not an excuse for writing the same character for the same actor.

Also in response to Ants request for MORE RISKS:

give us more REWARDS to match that desire for more risk in this competition. Doesn't have to be anything of monetary value. Could be something simple like having a user voted poll for a genre or character or idea - anything to engage us.

It's nice to hear you say that, not least because for our team, I think when Ant issued this declaration, it almost felt like he was talking to us – although we had already resolved to do things a bit differently this year already (Number 1: "Go outside")

One thing I am looking forward to is what some of the already out-there teams do with active licence and encouragement to go *further* out there this year.

It is all very well saying "Take more risks", but it really needs to be defined.

Look back over the 48-hours winners for the past ten years, did any of them take risks?
If so, then there isn't a problem.
If not, then what exactly does it mean?
And would you be rewarded for it?

You have to love Ant for his offer, but dam it's vague. "Take more risks" This could mean any number of things from getting your lead to run down K'rd Naked as the day they were born to rigging your camera to a stock car to editing techniques that make your stomach turn. If any team tries to win this award specifically make sure you post your film link here after the comp I'm sure most of us would love to see it.

I think maybe it's vagueness is intentional. So everyone can interpret it differently and we at least get teams doing stuff that's different to their usual stuff.

I don't think he gives a shit about bizarre, or nude, or anything else for its own sake, I think he wants people to make the shorts we actually want to make without trying to appeal to the judges or even the audience.

Just be authentic and tell your own story and have fun, anything beyond that just doesn't matter.

I think he's wanting us to try to attack the more challenging aspects to film making.
More outlandish costumes, locations, make-up, storylines, characters.
Film outdoors.
Make our own music.

I think the nudity aspect is not what he wants.

That seems just as nebulous as the original call to action though. For the most part I can't really differentiate between films that appeal to the judges and what I would consider a good film.
There are always one of two snubs each year, and one or two films which get into the finals despite not being 'that great', but I think I'd still rather watch 12 finalists of great quality with cohesive stories than a bunch of esoteric films which don't make sense.
I'm not saying that's what Ant wants, nor what you're saying, but I think that's the danger here.

I agree that if they're shifting toward pure esotericism it could be a bit of a disaster but if they're cracking down on those (particularly pro) teams churning out mediocrity then that's awesome.

I don't feel that the films are stale or average.
The more experienced teams are creating quality films and I like them.
Something like 'Rubble' from a couple of years ago I feel is brave and quality.

Wellington City Manager here - every year we watch at least 150 films and the ones that stand out are surprising and unexpected. So many teams run with their first idea and its the same as lots of other team's first ideas. Films that do well are the ones where teams serve up something that you want to keep watching because you haven't seen it repeatedly. Risk will mean different things to different teams but I'd say find a way to do something new this year, whether its how you make the film, how you tell the story, where you shoot it - head out of whatever your comfort zone is...
