____________

Shot this last night in less than an hour,
without much idea of what I was going to do prior.

Spent today editing it,
and I'm pretty happy with the results,
though my only niggles are that the color grade makes it look like he has a bloody nose sometimes
and I didn't hold the camera steady/smooth enough for some of the stabilization to look perfect.

We recorded the audio in a closet after all the shooting
as the environment was pretty noisy from compressors and whatnot.
I recorded some room tone and added that back in underneath it all.
The audio turned out pretty great with a "large room" reverb added in.

I took the medium shot into After Effects and stabilized it on the harmonica,
while the other stabilized shots were done using the automatic stuff in FCPX.

About the only shot I wish we could have done better is the one where only the background is moving
as I put the tripod on a pallet jack along with Aidan
and pushed the whole affair around the room while it recorded.
The Zoom H1 picked up some pretty sweet deep rumbles during that part, heh.

Well I enjoyed that and considering the amount of time you did it in that's pretty good which means this year you have no excuse what so ever for being late on the hand in. :)

Just a couple of points, I know you recorded the sound and edited it in but there were a couple of times I noticed where the harp was slightly away from his mouth but the music was still flowing, it was slight but i noticed.

The other thing, and I'm not bagging you on this, I was waiting waiting and waiting for you to use that drain somehow in after effects. It was crying out please do something with me.

I went on tour with the 'Son's of Zion' down to Gisborne a month or so ago. We made this mini doco for them. Filmed in a van, a hotel and at the concert. Fun times. Feedback welcome.

Thanks Shifty,
though what were you thinking in regards to the drain?
I can't really picture anything happening with it...

Allan, that was awesome. Really well done.

I liked the text effects and font choice.
I liked the color tweaking and slight vignette on some of the shots.
I liked the little "bip" sounds when the text appeared.

Really well-paced edits, great music choices and shot choices throughout,
lots of cool/interesting shots and just... really slick. Really slick.

Very nice. Technically and artistically spot-on.

Thanks for your kind words! It was definitely an experience filming on the fly with a DSLR (especially in the van). Trying to get the audio right was definitely a mission but I learnt a lot from it. I shot about 50gig of footage while I was on the road with them, it was tough deciding what to keep in and what to leave out in the edit. They were happy and their fans seem to like the video so that's always good.
