New reviews / screening room!

Thoughts on the new fancy screening room?

I love the look of it. Just wish you could click on a team name and see all their films. Even if it just loaded the search results for the team name, although the search isn't always perfect.

Also should city finalists have a little banner like national finalists? Or perhaps just have the films separated like in the old screening room to make the distinction?

Damn. Old review site gooone. But love this new one, though I still reckon a rating system helps but understand why they got rid of it :)

Ah damn, I liked the ratings as it helped me get a good idea of my own improvement year on year and how my different films were received! I wish I could have downloaded that data first (my fault for not being a super spreadsheet geek and saving it anyway I guess!).

Love that they're combined though, how cool.

Would like to see the city finalists with banners for sure, there's a lot of films to wade through in Auckland that aren't winners!

Also like the idea of clicking a team to see all their films. But I know they can't implement everything at once, hopefully they'll do this.

Please please can they set up a special category for the year 2020:lockdown so everyone's go up, really want to see more than just the finalists :)

I also like that it links people's real names to all the films it could pull matching credits for on the screening room :)

The email from Ruth says " Our new screening room is launching today and you will be able to share your film there with the 48HOURS community."

but the screening room page says:

If your city finalists have not been announced, DO NOT UPLOAD YOUR FILM.
You may add films created for the previous years at any time.
The 48HOURS Screening Room supports films uploaded to YouTube and Vimeo.

Which is it?? haha

Clicking a team name to show all their films is problematic when certain teams enter under different names each year (either by choice or because they accidentally spell things slightly differently), and when teams can also change personnel dramatically / splinter into smaller teams, and so on. It'd require a ton of hand curation to function properly and it honestly probably isn't worth the effort. You can always just use search.

Also: correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems like it's currently only possible to post reviews of films that have been posted online? Surely this has gotta change when we return to screening films in cinemas.

I think it looks great and the integration into the screening room does make things easier. Unfortunately, the "Please treat it as a review site rather than a comments section." has already been broken with film-makers replying to reviews. Hard to stop I guess.

An interesting question!

One thing when I click on my profile it lists my Entries as THREE. Two of my films and one of TBALCs. Not sure how that works. :)

Well, with this design it is. I'd say that making people put ratings on their posts is sufficient to frame them as reviews instead of comments, but then again people responded to reviews in the old site as well.

On "my account" there's Utka, and two films I wasn't involved in (or even in the same city as). I imagine it's a bug to be worked out, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what would make that happen!

Noticed that searching names in the search box also turns up results, presumably drawn from wrapup form data. Neat.

Other things I like: Being able to search filter by "Most Recent" and also you can go back and review films from previous years - all the way back to 2004 should you desire!

Then again, when you think about it, what actually is the downside of comments that aren't reviews? If comments don't require a star-rating then it's not harming any score averages, and it can only help in encouraging discussion and community, surely.

Aside from some stroppiness that could perhaps occur, I think it's just an aesthetic thing for me. If the ability to respond to a review popped out to the side in a different colour then it wouldn't seem like it was just part of the review chain. I agree with you about the discussion/community. I've wanted to respond to reviews of my films in an appropriate setting; especially to those who suggest the inclusion of zombies.

At least it will stop the thoughtless "Excellent- I loved every second of it- 1/7 stars" type of reviews. Maybe in the future reviewers who have a reputation for giving valid constructive feedback might get their own separate rating column, like the dedicated Mista Teas. I suppose you can always state a rating you might give in a comment.

Thanks again for all your efforts Stu - so often your comments have hit the mark, and who knows how many young filmmakers have you have helped to lift their game.

Hey! It's great to hear your feedback on the new site - the old screening room needed an upgrade and our big dream was to integrate the reviews and the screening room. It has taken a while and a lot of thought has gone into it. City Finalists should have a banner - there are still a few bits of code to clear up and we are working with Cactus lab to sort it out.

We do appreciate the reviews people take the time to write, it's so great to get the feedback.

I guess what we were trying to avoid in the reviews site is big threads that become a discussion between 2 people, but in the end, people will use it how they use it and for us, engagement is the main goal.

You also may have noticed that we removed the credits from the display - we still have that info in the back end in case we need it - this is because we were getting so many requests from people to remove their name from a 48hour film from 2013 that they acting in and it was coming up on a google search of their name.

Our main goal was to simplify the whole experience, to have a clean design and this site is an important archive for of our past films. I think the uploads are going to be huge this year so looking forward to seeing it blow up with amazing films after the finals night!

Yeah, I would hope that long term we still see all entered fils listed, just with a placeholder thumbnail until the films are uploaded, so we can still review them even if they're not uploaded.

If not I suppose that will mean more people will watch and review those who do upload theirs, which I suppose is still fair, lol.

Looking forward to the explosion after the screening!

The City Finalists banner is now there. Was meant to be there, just got missed by our web developers.

We have decided that the reviews will happen as the films are uploaded and not before - it is a lot more coding (and a big cost) to allow this feature. We also like the reviews attached to the film rather than a disembodied review. The comp is constantly evolving (change is in the air!) and the new screening room/review site is a much better showcase of our past films.

The new screening room looks great and having the reviews integrated is a great idea in theory.

Losing the ability to review films before the film is posted online is a terrible shame though. It feels like this will remove any kind of hype or momentum that the competition has between the weekend and the finals. Most films won’t get any kind of reviews, maybe the odd “lol classic” here and there but the constructive reviews are one of the best aspects of the comp imo. 90% of teams will have no idea what anyone thought of their film or what they can improve on etc.

I understand the reasoning and imagine that it’s a final decision, but it doesn’t stop me from mourning it’s loss. Maybe the change in the air refers to some kind of new system for the all-important feedback teams crave.

If we're being honest, given that finalists are (rightfully) prioritised in the screening room, most of the films will only ever be watched by large audiences in the heats. If there's no way to post a review right after the heat, those films just aren't gonna get reviews.

Maybe it'll be time for the old-old-school method of posting lengthy forum threads to come back.

More likely, there'll be a bunch of orphan Facebook posts that get buried by the algorithm.

One of my favourite parts of this competition is going to all the heats and then going home to review everything I watched, so loosing that energy is a bit of a bummer. However, I'm hopeful that this new screening room will encourage teams to actually upload their films so that they can get reviewed! Quite often there are films post heats that I wish I could see again but sadly are never uploaded, or there are films from other cities that have some great reviews I wish I could see but they're not available to watch. This new review system could improve the upload rate a little bit, which would be awesome! It would also mean less work having to remember the details of all the films you watch in a heat, and would allow reviewers to be more specific with their feedback.
