Let's get NOSTALGIC. What are your favourite memories from 48Hours over the years?

I think my highlight would be hearing our score with our film for the first time in the 2014 competition, and how wonderfully it tied together the movie, which at that point I was a little nervous about in terms of flow. Music solves so many problems in editing!

Tell me those moments that you look back on and smile.

For me, it was my first heat.
Our film didn't work out quite like we'd hoped, and then we face team 'White Tiger' in the heat. Seeing the Oscar nominated short film director, Taika Waititi's entry in the same heat as mine was awesome.
Seeing what he's done since? Priceless

It's the process for me - from brainstorming the idea (and the absurd things we come up with) to hearing people genuinely laugh at the situations we stick our protagonists into.

It's a drug.

Of all the 48hr memories we have I would have to place my money on the exceptionally forthright review of our superhero movie by NimbleMarmoset. Roasted sooooo hard!

It's how we've started every 48hr weekend since. Totally great team building exercise having that read aloud to the whole team.

Piss ourselves laughing every time.

There’s always one song, or silly youtube video that the crew quotes all weekend long.

Last year it was a record called Disco Dancer.
One of the previous years it was this youtube video: https://youtu.be/FWtO0cfgewY
One year we all coudln’t stop laughing because the simple act of filming a pie going from plate to mouth was just impossible to get right.

Above all I love that 3am late night vibe where people start going really crazy, it’s usualy too stressful to enjoy at the time but it’s a unique kind of fun.

I think the 1 memory that stands out is from my first heat. After our film finished screening Ant walked up to us shook my hand and said "Nice gag ratio".

Haha, well if it was me then I'm flattered to have had such an impact! However, are you sure you're not confusing me with someone else, "vault502" perhaps?:

I remember working with the other editor in through early hours of Sunday morning. We thought we were the only ones in the house so we decided to have a noise competition. This probably went on for about half an hour of us trying to make the loudest, silliest noises possible.

Lo and behold, my co-editor's girlfriend had been in the other room the whole time, trying to get some sleep or some shit, and to top it off she was 'actually scared'. Like what did she think we were gonna do: yell her to death?

Thankfully they split cause she was bad news from head to toe.

It's 2011. My first year competing. Shooting weekend was a blast and we're all looking forward to showing off our film.

My producer, a veteran of at least one more competition than I, takes me aside ahead of our screening in the heats. "Sam, I just want to prepare you- there is a genuine possibility that you will be nominated for best actor- I just want to prepare you for that." My head is whizzing with daydreams of a burgeoning acting career built off the back of this award.

The screening starts. There were some ok films in our heat, don't get me wrong, but none had nearly the heart or humour as our short. By the time our film was due to screen I was fizzing with excitement. The audience didn't have any idea of the masterpiece they were about to watch. This was the start of something.

And as they say, the rest is history. Four films (one as male lead, two major supporting roles), a TV show, a Golden Globe nomination and several independent film awards later, I do still look back on that awesome shooting weekend.

The moral of the story is that at the end of the weekend you may have something only your team members are proud of- and during the heats you all realise your baby was actually a hot mess, you can't hear the dialogue and the audience remain in a painful silence for the longest four minutes of your life. OR you may end up with something that catapults your career into the stratosphere. Having a good weekend is still the best reward.

Keep dreaming peasants. xx

Agree. And..

Every year - not being late or disqualified. But more specifically...

2008 - Spotting the V gorilla at Nandos and winning $100. Having a random viewer tell my lead actor how much she loved him in the film. Getting a DVD in the post.
2009 - Getting the film in with about 5 seconds to spare. Being promised some of the V-signage at the hand-in venue only to be later denied by Steve Austin. Getting a DVD in the post.
2010 - Managing to successfully misappropriate some of the V signage under Steve's watch. Watching footage during the edit of our stand-in soundie regularly slipping into shot without a care. Getting a DVD in the post.
2011 - Pinching some 48HR posters. Seeing teams at the hand-in lurking by the door trying to be the last ones in without them realising they needed to have reached the desk by 7pm. Having a school team I mentored win an award at the finals.
2012 - Nominated for Best Make-up. Spending most of Saturday chained up in my garage including when one team member fell off a ladder and all I could do to help was watch.
2013 - Got Musical and was kind of prepared. Moving out of my house the same weekend for EQC repairs.
2014 - Team of four. Made an often dubiously drawn "Illustration with movement" film that was nominated for Best Animation. Genuinely gutted that it didn't win but still a good memory.
2015 - Outrageous sex scene that was shot while I edited the rest of the film. Sounded like a lot of fun. Wish I'd been in there...
2016 - Having most of the team go down with illness on the eve of the weekend. Cobbled together people at the last minute who were great.

Been there! Nothing feels quite as awesome, but also as "I never want this to happen again" as being the frantic teaming handing your film in within the last 30 seconds.

"I never want this to happen again"

Very true. I had to send the delivery team guys ahead with a tape (as it was in those days) as I was still hopeful about exporting a second & better copy to another tape. (Crazy, stressed thinking) Took a garbled phone call at about 7:01 still unsure whether we'd made it or not. Was horrible. Later, over a beer, I heard of just how illegal their driving may have been. Not good really. From that year on we've made sure that no matter what we're done with the film at 6:15pm. That said, I ALWAYS feel tense during the drive to the hand-in venue.

I live down a long drive-way. Last year as we went to leave for hand-in my elderly neighbours decided to leave at the same time, and of course blocked the drive as one of them had forgotten something and had to go back inside...probably only a few minutes but seemed like 20.

Love the 48...

We have had similar experiences (as I'm sure a lot of others have had).
In 2014, we sent away a dud version of our film at about 6.45pm, and then a good version of it at 6.52pm, while I sent out a mass message explaining that if the first guy gets to the hand-in before the second guy, he's to wait until the last two seconds for the second guy to arrive before handing it over.
After I'd finished sending out this message, I looked at my phone and it was 6:59. Got a call a couple of agonizing minutes later from the second guy telling me he made it in, and I just started crying haha.
That was our best year too, and because it was over Daylight savings, it meant we actually had 49 hours-- and we used every one of them!
