I thought this was a competition where deadlines were important?

It seems they have decided to announce one category at a time, spaced over the next 24 hours. (Why? Who knows...but check out the facebook page)

Am I right in thinking that national category awards have been de-regionalised out of the blue? I'm really hoping no-one has booked flights to and accommodation in Auckland because they were excited about their chances of winning the Best Actor award that they are *potentially not even getting nominated for*.

Seems that way. This year has certainly been a bit of a head scratcher at times and it's getting scratchier.

Watching that is much less frustrating :)

This has to be a stall of some kind, right? Like some international judge's results aren't back yet and they need to play for time. I struggle to believe that it's just somebody's terrible idea.

You'd hope so. I'd also like to think that everyone would understand if that reason was actually communicated. That said, it certainly doesn't help travel/accommodation plans for those outside of Auckland.

Strange and curious oddities at times this year...

Last year we had a little over 3 weeks notice to get organised to fly up if we could. With that kind of notice airfares are pretty reasonable and work tends to be more lenient around letting people have time off to travel etc. This year the notice will be a little bit over a week.

The 48Hours crew have historically been really good with notification so I'm assuming it's just a glitch in the communication matrix. I agree with you, Stu - if they came out and said (for example) 'Sorry - Peter Jackson was super busy because he's Peter Jackson' or whatever we'd presumably all understand. It's just unfortunate that the lack of communication has coincided with the whole lack of notice aspect. I suspect that'll reduce the number of non-Auckland team members at the finals, which is a real shame (assuming of course, that a non-Auckland team makes the final).

Yeah, the announcement process is rather disturbing, especially for the lower South Islanders.
It takes weeks to make a fresh batch of woad, and arriving with last months woad on is bad form, just bad form.

I'd agree with that too. This year started with a hiss 'n' a roar - early notification of the shoot weekend, an early rego discount, 48HR merchandise, a new logo, sponsor giveaways, plenty of emails prior to the weekend.

Then it seemed like they stopped talking to us...

Do... do you think they're seeing another 10,000 film competition entrants? /single tear

OK. All I can think of is that they're posting results as they come to hand. There's no other explanation for this level of randomness / pure evil.

Yo 48HRS crew, if there's a delay, you'd do much better to tell us.
