It's quiet. Too quiet.

Does anyone else get the feeling, just based on how little is happening here in the forums compared to previous years, that a lot of people haven't quite got the message about 48hours being up in just a couple of weeks?

That's what I was thinking, my brain is still in preparation mode and it is less than 2 weeks away.

in reply to Sixfoot10:

It's kind of strange how un-nervous I am this time around. Maybe it's because I already know I make strangely paced movies with dumb endings that very few people like so there's no longer any apprehension or fear.

This year I'm aiming for an under 90 second running time (but everything changes on that Friday night, so who knows). How about you, any new goals?

Have there been ads this year, or are they relying on word of mouth?

Several of the 'old hands' on the forum have stopped posting and thus the babble hasn't been the same.
I suspect that there will be loads of the classic questions popping up over the next week.

Well, people do love to do things at the last moment, haha!
Last year, over 8oo teams registered around the country which was a record wasn't it? I wonder if the number would match this year...

First time ever we aren't doing it - combination of people growing up and having families and equipment getting ruined in a short shoot a couple of months ago. So it could be the old guard all getting that bit older.

It's sad but I'm looking forward to having a nice sleep over the weekend.

Might join another team I guess, and will be back next year - just momentary blip.

This year makes 7 for me.
Our team morphs a little every year and that keeps it going.
I'll be interested to see if numbers are affected (positively or negatively) by having it in April.
I hope there aren't too many teams that return in mid-April and try to register...

The one-shot and non-dialogue genres is scaring everyone away! Exterminate (repeat) lol
I wonder if anyone feels that the quality of films have improved so much - being very professional, could sway teams not to enter...i have at times felt that way..

I personally really wanted the non-dialogue genre. Not so much the one shot though.......
Sometimes I feel that way about the films being so professional, but in general I find it makes me much keener to be pitting myself against really excellent film makers. And failing. Miserably. But with great joy in my heart.

I think courtroom drama would be a lot of fun but in the poll of pick a genre it was loosing big time.

The quality of the comp has gone up over the years, but there are plenty of highly amateur teams in there (me included).

I think the more unusual genres simply forces good planning on the Friday night.

We've got a planning meeting this weekend.

Should have two divisions. One division for the experts where they are eligible for the best prizes, however they get all the tricky genres. One division for newbies and amateurs with lesser prizes for them. These crews get more generic genres. Wildcards can be picked from both divisions. Elements still the same for both divisions... it might encourage the lesser gifted film makers to enter amongst the established guns. That's only if numbers drop. If they don't - then don't change the formiula

in reply to Michael Hollis:

It has been mooted and argued.
But there was much discussion around what makes a difficult genre.
If you had a tick box of whether you wanted to compete in the "Expert" or "Beginner" category it might work. But then again it might not.

I like the fact that I go up against 'the big teams'.
My first ever short film was in the same heat as one by a Oscar nominated short film director (Taika). There be some serious kudos in that.

I hope no one gets put off by others making better films than them. For me it inspires me to work harder next year.

Should have two divisions.

This comes up every single year.

It's never going to happen.

And nor should it.

Does seem a bit quiet doesn't it. Wonder how regos are going.

Btw, total non-sequitur... Do the stats on what camera is used, that we fill out in the wrap up form, get published anywhere?

Nah Hollis, I think that'd put me off entering actually. I like the element of real-life mix of people competing, makes it much more hardcore rather than another run of the mill film comp.

The early date has definitely thrown a few teams, everybody I have talked to has said they are unprepared to some degree (but they're still amped).

I'm still trying to lock down locations, but we'll work with whatever we end up with (as always).

Our team is 90% amateurs, but we love competing against and seeing amazing teams and films every year. We're always in an incredibly strong heat (Goodfellas, Halcyon, Hybrid, Idiotvision to name a few) but enjoy measuring ourselves against the best.

Chatter will (hopefully) pick up over the coming week, as panic mode sets in.

Half Shell Productions:
Rialto 48 Hours 2014 - Siren's Call (Time Travel)
Rialto 48 Hours 2013 - 17:09 (Techno Thriller) - Best Makeup (Auckland), Finalist Best Makeup (National)
V48 2012 - Finger Bang (Action) - Best Script (Auckland), Finalist Best Script (National)
V48 2011 - Best Foot Forward (Rom Com)
V48 2010 - Love Game (Sports)

Previous Teams:
V48 2009 - Little Death (Musical)
V48 2008 - Misconceptions (Romance)
V48 2007 - Grind World (Grindhouse)
V48 2006 - Monster Within (Monster)

Hi here I am! lol :D

Feeling a lot less of a panic this year as we are no longer a virgin team. We all know what to expect so a lot less questions this time...

Wonder if "critical mass" has been hit and there are a lot less first-timers so less questions being asked?

Where are all the actors this year? Have they all been swooped up by the other teams?

Being so early this year has affected availability of core team members (them being so talented that they are in stage productions) - but on the positive side : we have a whole 3599 seconds more than we used last year, so that will be useful
