I keep thinking about this years character

Even though the competition is finished and my film is handed in with all my crews names misspelled in the online wrap up form I can't help but ponder the trait of the character this year. He's a liar but do you have to keep ramming home that he's a liar by showing him saying something and then showing how what he said isn't true? Potentially anything he says could be a lie like he could make a quip about another character which isn't true or comment about another characters chances, just one of those things that I keep thinking about.

I think we'll see many examples of other characters pointing out the trait - "You're a liar!", "Don't lie to me, Morgan!" etc, etc.

He/she needs to tell at least one lie which (preferably) has plot relevance - to me that's quite sufficient.

do you have to keep ramming home that he's a liar

Hi Craig, Congratulations on your 10th year in the competition, it was only my 4th. No offence, but .... haven't you figured out by now that conveying the trait should NOT be something that is forced onto the audience every minute of a film?
Subtle is spot on in my view and anything else is just over the top and un-necessary, leading to audience cringe factor. E.g. last year with all the pill bottles and beds. I mean, come on people, there are bound to be some intelligent soles in the audience who can work it out as the story unfolds.
Our trait conveyance this year was one verbal lie early on that was confirmed visually at that same moment. We had a second confirmation a lot later just because it was so damn funny (to us anyway, had Rom-Com).
I find lots of watching of previous years winners and questioning what made their movies stand out on all of the required aspects is a great way to learn have I can improve on my own work. Cheers, Meatloaf.

Have to agree with Mr Loaf.

The character trait is just that - a trait. It can or should be expressed exactly as you'd express any other trait. Through context within the film.

No one has to call him a liar, and he doesn't need to constantly lie, but if someone watched the film without knowing anything about the character and you then asked them to describe Morgan they should ideally come up with "liar" or a similar descriptor.

In my opinion the character is always one of the hardest elements to nail. But bluntly bashing it home with dialogue or unnecessary repetition usually isn't the answer (although sometimes it works).

Agree. But at least they gave it a fantastically excellent name this year. Maybe it'll be Dylan next year? Though that is more of a girl name than unisex it'd probably be alright still.

Agree.
I think we nailed the character, but should have pushed his name/identity more.
Is this an issue? We have a character that is a liar and can clearly be identified as Morgan Foster, but don't call him Morgan or Mr Foster etc...
Thoughts?

but don't call him Morgan

I wouldn't have thought that was needed ... if he/she is at a conference or meeting then a "Hi My Name is: Morgan" sticky label is all that's required to establish identity, presuming it's readable on shot and doesn't end up on the cutting room floor!

So is that "Modulated Frequency" or "Medium Fibreboard"? Probably the latter. Anyway, good luck with discovering if it's a Yes or No to your question at your Heat. Cheers.

I doubt you have to specifically name your character in dialogue etc - if it's clearly established that one of the character fits the trait then I think it qualifies. But ultimately it's up to the judges as to whether they agree.

OMG, just thought of another two words that "MF" could stand for! Rappers, Gangstas and Nimlin probably know exactly what they are!

I've always tried to aim for subtlety but year after year I can't help but wonder if I've gone so subtle that it's clear enough that this character possesses the trait I guess some years I've not been that subtle, with Nicky Brick I remember I had this ridiculous line of dialogue "It's just bad luck I guess"
But yeah, basically I've tried to go with the unreliable narrator approach and I'm not sure how successful I've been so I guess time will tell so to speak.

In one of the reviews for our film,
the reviewer mentions how confusing it was
for Morgan to say he's going to computer class
but then end up in craft class.

I guess it was too subtle, heh.

The reviewer didn't connect the dots? I mean, I can understand how it'd lead to a couple of seconds of confusion, but surely while writing the review they would've noticed.......
