How much money did you spend on your short?

Inspired by a review of our short that implied we had a massive budget, I'd like to get an idea of what people are spending on their entries?

Aside from an OTT amount of food for cast and crew (which we always pride ourselves on) - we spent a grand total of $70 on props from First Scene and Hollywood Props on ours.

What was your budget?

I spent $100 on an HDMI Splitter so we could monitor the 5D and let the camera operator monitor on his own 8" screen - it didn't work.

Spent $40 on cape material for our superhero and $25 on an HDMI cable I didn't need.

We spent a bit on food but everyone chipped in.

spent about $150 on cutting mats, craft knives, stacks of paper in different weights, a few lamps, celophane for a cheap alternative to gels, then $100 on camera equipment which only bloody well arrived yesterday (do'h!)
We probably spent about $150 on food too.

It was our first year so we had to start from scratch with equipment.

But you know what? I think we got off easily, we didn't have to rent any locations, no costumes, no professional gear we didn't have, no dollys, no booms or mixers.

That's what I love about animation :D

So where did you get your camera, production equipment, computer(s), editing software etc...
Now pretend you rented it all for the 48s. How much would you have spent?

I don't consider any of that as part of the 48 Hours budget if you would have it anyway. I didn't get my camera, computer or software specifically for the 48 Hours, I would have bought them regardless, so I don't count them in the budget.

Otherwise you'd also have to count the cost of the house you filmed in, assuming it belongs to one of the team members.

In terms of money we spent specifically for the weekend (excluding entry fee) - I think somewhere around $350 this year, but a good $250 of that was me buying stuff that I can use again (DIY track dolly & green screen), so the actual value extends past the weekend.

I counted everything I specifically bought with the idea that I would be using it for the weekend. Sure some of it I will use again, but I might have bought it at a later date or a smaller version so I still counted it in my budget.

Weekend exclusive: We hired some red heads ($45) and bought a petrol can ($12).

Bought in time for the weekend but would have purchased anyway: Replacement halogen bulbs ($20) another HDD ($130) and a backdrop support system ($200).

And of course food and registration fee was on top of that. We had each team member contribute $20 to cover these expenses plus the lights and petrol can mentioned above.

I asked each member to pay $20 to cover costs.
We spent about $70 on food, $50 on making dvd's for everyone associated with it, and then spent the rest on going out for dinner the night of the heat.

We spent about $200 on food. $50 odd on props. and way too much on the few remaining master quality DV tapes I could find in the city (the factory was apparently destroyed in the Japan earthquake). Defo shiting to solid state somehow next year. Other than that - managed to source all our gear for free and was a pretty cheap weekend compared to other years.

As far as I know there is no rule that says you can't spend all the money you like on making a better film.

I would not apologize for doing so and I don't think anyone should be running around trying to criticize teams who happened to invest a bit more.

In fact I would view it as a greater comittment to the cause of making a better film.

What a stupid question! Serioulsy!

Where did you get your locations? Crew? Actors? Equipement?

Same place as everyone else ... beg, borrow, or steal.

Any gripes about other teams spending more time sourcing equipment is nothing but sour grapes.

One year a team had a 747 ... I don't think anyone was crying about how much money that would cost another team to rent.

As far as I know we bought a wig, probably for about $5.

Beyond that it was really just food. Some pizzas from Sal's on Saturday night, a variety of snacks on Friday night.

We may get charged for light rental (have to wait and see if an invoice arrives).

Cast and crew mostly covered their own expenses for parking and lunch and stuff.

In terms of the "what we had that we didn't pay for" - well shitloads. Camera, Steadicam, three edit suites. And then there's crew - professional Soundie (for the first time!), DoP/Steadicam Op, Editor, Cam Assist/Focus Puller, Actors - and that's just the people doing what they are actually trained/experienced in... Then there's the others filling in whatever roles they are good at but only do once a year.

What would it cost to do without any favours? No idea. Thousands?

Just $80 on food. Everything else we either owned already, borrowed or built. But hey if you've got the money to spend on your film then why not? Use what you have, I've got nothing against that.

Our EX1 + Boom mic cost $279.50 there is the registration cost I'm not sure how much the base or the food budget was because another team member handled that.
We borrowed some lights and I already had a macbook pro with FCS so no need for 3 edit suites?! WTF?
I guess the real lesson here is friends in the industry might be better then having a lot of money.

Oops, I think I have been misinterpreted.
I was only adding that gear is a substantial cost to film making - in that if you made a film for theatre release then no doubt you'd need to pay for a lot more stuff.
Some teams have lots of gear at their disposal and some have very little. That is all.

The idea of a 48 hours budget needs to be in context.
