How much money did you spend on your short?

Inspired by a review of our short that implied we had a massive budget, I'd like to get an idea of what people are spending on their entries?

Aside from an OTT amount of food for cast and crew (which we always pride ourselves on) - we spent a grand total of $70 on props from First Scene and Hollywood Props on ours.

What was your budget?

in reply to Stanislavski:

Not sour grapes from me.
Those with cash can spend it on anything they like, other than paying their crew.
I think it just creates a different feel to the film and if you are aware of that, then that film accordingly.
If you tried to make 'Avatar' with a 'Blair Witch' budget, you are going to struggle. And vice versa, making 'Blair Witch' with the millions of 'Avatar' wouldn't have made it any better.
Is 'Avatar' better than 'Blair Witch'? Maybe, maybe not. Totally different films, both successful in their own ways.

We spent a little over $1000 all up I think. that included a dual hotel suite for 3 nights, a crap load of rented camera gear, and the rest was food.

Been doing this since 2006. This year put together a brand new team 'Muddy Funsters', got Crime genre, created "The Grate Cheese Caper". 3rd place in audience vote. Best year ever!

Dear densemike,

If thats all you were going to say then why did you ask us what it would have cost to rent the gear?
Do you think Shakespeare would have written any better with spell check?
Anyway in my case it would have cost nothing as I looked under my bed and found a bag full of Canon and Sony.

As to context.
At one extreme V48 hours is an opportunity for the iphone owner to make a film to dogma, and see it on the big screen.

Then there is my context,There is $2.6 billion p.a. spent on film production in this country and a significant amount still goes to overseas crafts people.

We professionals spend our time making OTHER peoples films. The stuff you go home and watch every night.

Remember the successes of previous winners? It is very clear that the V48 hours is a (prestigious) rare opportunity for many industry professionals to showcase their OWN talents. And have a great time doing it.

I am amazed that people have gone to the heats and come away disappointed at the creativity. And THEN gone home and turned to their computers and moaned about it.

get over it!!! This festival would be vastly different without us.

thats not a bad idea. except if we need the same equipment we would be fighting to the death.

i've had this idea of two teams crossing over at some point, and share a couple of shots, and then moving on back into their story. that would be super cool.

$115 - light n dolly - thanks cinestuff!
$195 - entrance fee
$50 - sound
borrowed tripod - need to get a case of beer.
own dslr
food n extra bits was about $80
petrol - everyone chipped in their own

It works out to be approx $500 for us for a basic kit; including pick ups and drop off of equipment.

We got revenge film and it turned out that we didnt need to spend much money at all

There was the problem of commuting to auckland city from waiheke to and from the friday night meeting and to hand it in on sunday. It ended up costing soo much exactly $140

But other than that we bought a spare battery that was $15
Used some red and blue food colouring that was like $6
Petrol was the most expensive like $50
but turns out we didnt need buy props and got away with borrowing things from friends.

If we had have gotten something like super hero or horror im sure we would have had to invest in some good props...........

Because I'm generally interested.

Simple; If you hadn't looked under your bed and found "a bag full of Canon and Sony", but you still wanted to use all that type of gear then what would it have cost to rent? Or would you have downscaled to a more basic (and cheaper) kit?

For the record: I have all the gear I could ever want, but I fully understand that in the 48hour it doesn't help make a successful film on it's own.

I've wanted to do that for years - even discussed the idea with Bald Faced Cheek last year... One day.

We'll always use what we can get - the hope is that with various connections we have that we can beg and borrow neat stuff to play with (a Sony F3 this year, a RED One in 2008, for example) but if that doesn't pan out then we'll use what's more immediately available (a Canon 5D last year, a DVX100 in 2005).

Typically I won't pay for gear unless we really need and can't find it (might consider for sound kit, for example). But then I have a lot of good connections, if I didn't I think we'd still do the same - make do with what we could find. We do this for the fun of making the film, we're not going to spend a whole lot of money on it.

Spent $70 on kites! The Christchurch Kite Festival HAD to be on the same weekend as 48hours...

Anyone want to buy a kite for your kid/inner child? I hear it's fun to fly during thunderstorms.

Isn't there a rule that participants can be in one team and one team only?
