Grand National Finalists discussion thread

Right, let's the get the speculation mill going! I mean, I know it's always hard to do much one-to-one comparison without having seen all the contenders, but maybe at least if people from the various centres give their thoughts on who from their city they reckon has got good game, that might help paint the picture.

You know, it's interesting hearing these rundowns of likely contenders from the Wellington and Auckland regions, especially cos despite not having seen any of the films, I recognise almost all of the team names (with the exceptions being the respective city winners, although am I right in thinking that Prime Ribs features a little bit of Chess Club special sauce?).

Anyway, don't think I had much of a point to make, except to say that I do enjoy seeing the continuity of teams that come back again year after year. Maybe someone needs to compile an oral history of this competition?

Prime Rib has Chess Club special sauce in that we are inspired by their forever gr8 work (and I used to flat with Barnaby for like 2 years) and like them we started off in Wellington.

I think lack of parochial "we gonna beat y'all!" from Auckland comes from A: general lack of forum chat in general these days and B: the fact that so many of the Auckland entries were really strong! We felt very #blessed to win the city competition and it easily could have gone a variety of ways. In other years I would vouch for a number of them to take it out, but hearing such good things about other centres so who knows.

- PickleThugs were probably my fave of the bunch, super tight script and perfect comedy beats. So much story in 5 mins and never outstays its welcome!
- Hanyesfilm combined Jim Henson nostalgia with 2006 48HOURS nostalgia, couldn't imagine a better puppet film.
- Finest Creation is beautifully acted and will legit make you cry
- Viva La Dirt league's was probably the most laugh out loud, and has a killer ending
- Charlie Loves Me Most comes from the team behind the dynamite web series PSUSY and has a brilliantly funny script that would stand alone well outside the competition
- Time Travel Call Centre is really inspired, conceptually ambitious but executed more simply than any of the Auckland films
- Chess Club's Barnaby always paid his rent on time, was tidy, and fun to be around! Great flatmate would recommend!

WE HYPED FOR THE FINAL YET

Prime Rib
2017: Bookcase: The Seaquel Auckland Finalist

2011: Tagalongs Screened at a Heat
2010: Life in the Bus Lane Auckland Finalist
2009: Wet Impact Late
2008: About a Bug Late
2007: Bookcase Wellington Finalist
2006: Gunther and Me Wellington Finalist

In a shocking twist, the experience of flatting with Barnaby sweeps the awards in 2016.

Could we expect "People You've Flatted With" to be a genre next year, maybe?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Prime Rib take it out, their film hit all of the points that make a winner to a really high standard (Story, romance, comedy, really well put together and super impressive visual effects).

My fav from the Auckland finals was Rambunctious Gumption, funny as fuck! I don't think it has everything the judges usually go for in terms of a grand champ but I would love to be proven wrong there.

Yes, we've always allowed environments/models to be made before the competition, in the same way we don't expect every costume or set to be made within 48 hours for live-action movies.

Well, this is my first Grand Final as an actor in 8 years of trying. Closest was Best DQ'd in 2010 with Driveby Stigmata. Running time was over!

I am immensely proud of the fact we have made this Grand Final with Finest Creation, which was the only pure drama in a very strong Auckland Finals'. There were simply no really weak films in that group and it must have been a really hard job even picking that list.

Now that it's an International panel, I am really pleased just for our little short to be in these select handful.

For me, and I have acted in over 50 short films' now in my 8 or so years of acting, this is one of my personal favourites' and even I find it hard to watch, so I am hoping the judges feel the same in the nicest possible, emotionally moving sense.

Good luck to all in the Grand Final, as it's sure to be a worthy winner this year.

Thanks for link Sean! Facebook is really fussy about showing things to the three of us that haven't yet joined, but thankfully I got through to the youtube link:

I didn't manage to see all the films on the livestream, but I was happy to see one of the ones that made me go "ooo", win!
In fact, I agreed with a lot of the judging this year.

My personal favorite was Chillybox's Time Travel Centre. Intimate, high concept idea which left me thinking about it long after I left the cinema.

Nailed it, Koop! Huge congrats to all the winners. Wasn't able to catch the show last night, but I look forward to checking out all the finalists when they're online.
