Grand National Finalists discussion thread

Right, let's the get the speculation mill going! I mean, I know it's always hard to do much one-to-one comparison without having seen all the contenders, but maybe at least if people from the various centres give their thoughts on who from their city they reckon has got good game, that might help paint the picture.

I can't speculate on the main films, however I'm rather certain that LOOP by SQUAD will take home the Best School Team Award.

To give you an idea on our film, there we're two other films in our city (One being LOOP) and the other being 'A Close Shave' (Watch it in the Screening Room) that we're worthy of being in our spot.

I saw the poster for your guys film and I'm pretty excited. I'm imagining something similar to Video Game High School.

Next month is going to be SWEET!!!

I don't really care about winning any awards. I'm just happy to see our mugs up on the big screen :D

Yeah, I've seen that prediction from a few peeps on here. And odd that there hasn't been any equivalently loud smack-talk coming out of Auckland. So my question is, is Love.Exe demonstrably the best, end of story, or are Wellingtonians just better at working themselves into a one-eyed parochial fervour?

Oh, hmm, now you've got me puzzled - we haven't made a poster for ours (yet), so unless one of my teammates is going rogue on the poster-making front, I think you must be getting us confused with a different film.

Due to the nature of the competition each city basically has no idea of the quality of the others.
Borks film has a tight narrative, looks and sounds stunning and engages the audience's heart.
If it gets beaten, kudos to them.

Oh for sure, the city separation makes it frustrating trying to make any kind of speculation, since very few if any people have see more than one city's films outside of the judges. I guess I was more remarking on the lack of talk I've heard around any particular Auckland film, although that could simply mean that there are a few excellent films from there, with no clear single standout.

Frustrating? Nope, I think the mystery is half the fun. :D

Even if the exe.film is boss, I don't feel intimidated by following it.

Who knows? One of the smaller cities might have made a very artistic masterpiece. Flashback to 2011, The Grand Cheval was an epic surprise win. I thought the Lense Flare team made the better film.

Personally I'm rooting for Taranaki, Hamilton, Gisborne and even Chch. I wana see a new city in the top 3.

I'm pretty intrigued by this grand final. I have heard from higher ups quality is way up in the smaller centres.

Regional Judges don't get to see other cities before anyone else.

Am confident of a Bork! victory - it's a touching film and incredible what they achieved from a tech pov in 48hours - everything came together for them eg, getting a render farm was as much of a leg up as lens flare filming that burning building in 2014.

However it is very very difficult to judge how international judges will see it. I'm comparing with previous years. All of the wellington finalists are very very worthy of being there and would have genuine chances for winning as all bring something different to the showpiece.

Traces of nut is super slick and original. Lovely bongo drums NAILED their dystopian genre. Couch kumaras with a big time crowd pleaser. Squint Eastwood handpicked by pj...

I have also heard Auckland quality was way up - have been told it was an agonising process just getting the shortlist ready for judges.

Probably talking Bork! up a bit much but it's the first 48hours film where I've had multiple people be disbelieving it was made over the weekend. Enjoy it at the final :)

Having sat back and thought about, I think it was because I was jealous.

Nice! Sounds like there are heaps of goodies to look forward to coming out of Wellington. And yeah, I suspect that on the Auckland front it's probably more a case of a solid block of great films, as opposed to just one or two standouts. Great to hear about strong offerings from the smaller centres too. If nothing else, I'm expecting some good variety in this final.

Oh I've heard there are definite auckland standouts from people I trust (pickle thugs, prime rib and haynesfilm). And have always been a fan of alan morrison's work - he has a long history with the competition through moffilaide previously and not surprised viva la dirt league made it through given that's his team :)

It's interesting to note that three of the most 'normal' genres of this year (Horror, Mystery and Rom-Com) are very well-represented in the finalists line-up. Maybe it's the case that while they might seem a bit boring to some, it's at least easier to build a good story on the scaffold of a tried-and-true genre.

That all said, it's also great to see one new genre (Bro or Bechdel) tied for the lead in genre representation.

The Bro or Bechdel Genre was very flexible. It could have been a comedy, drama, rom-com, horror. ect. So long as it had a story about men... or ladies. lol You could pretty much blend multiple genres into it. Like we did. :) Our film has at least 3 genre traits that could easily define it.

The flexibility was what made it such a dominating genre.

In our city horror was the least made, as was the puppet one.

There are a fair few strong contenders from the Auckland finals.

Prime Ribs entry is tight and polished. Really deserving of the Auckland title this year.

Haynesfilm Bunch was so great. Just an all in "This is a puppet movie" grin fest which had me nostalgic for some early Henson stuff.

Pickle thugs NAILED comedy of errors. So great.

My personal favorite was Chillybox's Time Travel Centre. Intimate, high concept idea which left me thinking about it long after I left the cinema.

This is going to be a great grand finals I think... :)
