Grand Finals Buzz-generating thread

Okay, these forums are unnaturally quiet, so here's my attempt at poking and prodding (probably should have done this a week ago). The Grand Final is in two days' time, so let's get talking about it! Predictions, hopes, dreams, let's hear it.

Of course, things are made difficult by the fact that none of us have actually seen all of the finalists, and so we really have a poor picture of what the field of competition is like. Attendees to the Auckland finals are best-placed I suppose, since they've seen almost two-thirds of the national finalists - so you guys, who are the Auckland frontrunners? Also, Wellington's "Brains?" seems to be getting some good buzz from the punters there, so I'm very intrigued by what I've heard about that one.

I'd also recommend that people watch the city finalists from the various centres that didn't progress to the nationals, as that can help to give a picture of the calibre in those respective cities. Not a perfect gauge of course, but better than nothing. I want opinions, goddammit, I want debate, gentlemanly disagreement (and also the slightly less-civil type, as long as the insults are colourful).

And... go.

My pick for Grand National Winner would be Lense Flare, but Downlow Concept will come pretty close and Del Sur too.

I'd love to see Mukpuddy or Goodfellas take it out, they've certainly been there enough times to deserve it.

Noise and Pictures are my most anticipated film to see, and going by all the buzz they've had I think they might just take it out...

Biggest hope is that we take out Best Script (Half Shell), but again I think Noise and Pictures might take it. Also just noticed you're from TBALC, which technically makes us rivals. May the best team win!

Half Shell Productions:
Rialto 48 Hours 2014 - Siren's Call (Time Travel)
Rialto 48 Hours 2013 - 17:09 (Techno Thriller) - Best Makeup (Auckland), Finalist Best Makeup (National)
V48 2012 - Finger Bang (Action) - Best Script (Auckland), Finalist Best Script (National)
V48 2011 - Best Foot Forward (Rom Com)
V48 2010 - Love Game (Sports)

Previous Teams:
V48 2009 - Little Death (Musical)
V48 2008 - Misconceptions (Romance)
V48 2007 - Grind World (Grindhouse)
V48 2006 - Monster Within (Monster)

Lense flare was so well executed, definitely a great watch. I think if you were to remove films from the context of the v48hours, Downlow Concept holds up as my favourite short film tho. First and 2nd place for those two. Either way round wouldn't bother me.

I also thought that wizard film by voltron and the holograms was great. It needs an award of some kind. The award of awesomeness, that'll do. And third place. Possibly 2nd depending on how high the moon is passing through the night sky as i watch, and what i had for breakfast that day.

I know i haven't seen the other regions, but lets be honest... Hehehehehehehe.

Ah yes, rivals, so we are. <pulls out fish from pocket, slaps it across opponent's cheek> Actually, looking through the various awards nominations on the list, I see that for quite a few of the awards, many if not all of the nominees are non-finalists, so it is possible to actually watch them right now in some cases (I'll check out your film later on tonight if I get a chance).

You know, in almost every possible way I think that the new system for determining the national finalists is better than the old system. Except, I do rather miss the one-eyed provincialism that we used to have with more strict regional representation (even if Auckland pretty much always won anyway). So yeah, glad to see some of that creeping into this thread. :)

It's a bit hard to get excited about the finals when you can't actually watch any of the films. I've seen two of the finalists (from CHCH) but have no idea how they compare to the other finalists.

How many people read the NZ Herald online article about the finals and thought cool where do I watch the films? It even said 'check out the V48 hours finalists' but only had descriptions of each film.

Not bitching on Auckland at all, but why do the finals have to be in Auckland every year? Should they not be spread around the 4 major cities. It is a nation wide competition after all. Then we all get a chance to experience the excitement of a finals night.

Rocket Boy... not sure what you mean. You can watch all the Grand Finalists via the live stream. Why would you want to watch them twice? It also helps us fill the Grand Final with live people - you know - the whole crux of why 48 works. A live audience.

Videoamp.. We could maybe at a pinch do them in Wgtn but I honestly don't think other regions would support the final as much as AK would. And what 2500 seaters are there elsewhere?

Lets be honest and talk #s - CHCH CITY FINAL didn't even sell out and that was only 400 seats with heaps of comps. Love the TRON and DNDN but really for the Grand Final? Nup.

Sorry the reality is Auckland is a MAJOR city with a huge population that can support an event like this. And we don't have the resources/favours in other cities like we do in AK.

So there's always going to be a focus on AK.. if AK wasn't part of 48 the comp would have been dead by year one.

I mean watch the films in advance of the finals. The whole thread is about 'the buzz' and there isn't any because no one (except the judges) has seen all the films, it's hard to have a opinion about which film is best when you haven't seen the films.

In previous years the films were shown on TV prior to the finals.

Yeah, while I absolutely take your point about trying to fill the final event itself up, no showing of the finalist films prior to the actual event does kill a little bit of the "buzz" that might otherwise build up beforehand - people speculating about their favourites, analysis, comparison, who might win, anticipation leading up to the announcements etc. Instead it sort of all happens in a rush because the awards ceremony is also the first chance that most of us have to actually see the films. (I think you might underestimate the number of people that would watch them twice, too.)

My personal favourite system was 2009 where the films showed leading up to the awards ceremony. I realise that's no longer possible with the TV arrangements etc, but it did create that real sense of anticipation.

I guess in the planning, it's a toss-up between big occasion vs big build-up. The big occasion is great, I have no doubt, but I suppose that for those of us that can't get to it, some more build-up (however it's created) would be nice.

I enjoyed reading the writeups about all the films in the Herald yesterday with the stills. Not quite the same, but am definitely looking forward to seeing them all tomorrow!

2012 - 'Dead Lucky' (part of Tuff Collective) Grand finalist.
2010 - 'The Hidden' (as Tuff Animation). City finalist, best animation nominee.
Before that: some others.

I live in Wellington, and would love to see that article. Is it on the Herald website? I've tried looking but I can't find it. Would you have a link by any chance?? I'm pumped for Saturday :) I'm up for the Make-up award for Brains? as well as our team - Noise and Pictures - getting through to the The Grand Finals! To be honest, I loved our film, but the reaction from everyone that has seen it, has been utterly amazing. We're all so humbled by their reaction, and to be up against some of NZ's best teams is an honour in it self. This is getting exciting!!

I do hear you but there's a real reason for it.

The Civic Grand Final is one of the few revenue making things that happen in the 48. If everyone has seen the finalists and the rest are all comped then not many will want to buy a ticket. It's hard enough to get them from the AK FINAL along to the GF straight after.

It's always going to be tricky.

Yeah - I totally understand the need to fill up that theatre, and tricky it is.

Dunno that there's really a solution. Maybe something along the lines of the system they've been using for years in Australian cricket coverage - with that, the state where the game is being played doesn't get the game on TV until the stadium sells out. But that's got its own set of problems, of course.

I can't wait for the finals! Heaps of our team are travelling up from Wellington for it and we're all really excited. It's going to be a great time. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the films. It sounds like there are some real beauties. I'm really looking forward to seeing how The Outwits go back and forth in time, while staying in the one-shot genre, just as an example. It's a real honour to be in the finals with some 48 Hours legends like Lense Flare and The Downlow Concept.
The only other film in the grand finals I've seen is Kids These Days and I'm not surprised it's there. I thought it was one to beat here in Wellington.

I don't mind travelling up to Auckland for the grand finals at all really. It's a pretty special occasion. So going to the Civic with a massive crowd makes the journey worth while for me and I love the fact that my flatmates and team mates who can't come will be able to watch on line.
My biggest hope for our film is that it gets as good a crowd reaction as it did in Wellington, 'cause that will make my year/film making career thus far.
Oh man, I'm getting all excited now.
