When it started I thought the ball was going to be the 'Bouncing ball sing a long with the words' type ball.

Interesting idea. Must have taken some time cutting out all the photos.

It took forever. I did a much too thorough job on the first few, especially given it's a bit subtle on some of the shots. Also, lots of AE puppet animation that I don't know if anyone even notices.

Great fun making it this year, very happy with the short, if not the result in the comp.

Thanks man, weren't you a judge in Welly? I'd really appreciate any pointers if you're allowed.

Yep I was, will have another watch tomorrow but technically good, pacing is good, music is good and it has a surreal/oneiric tone that I'm very fond of, like the images absolutely stick in your head (Hitler/War/distinctive white hallways etc). I'm sure there's been enough said about the lack of plot but to me that absolutely doesn't matter as I like films that take a chance in 48 Hours. Won't compare it to anything as that's lazy reviewing but it certainly calls to mind some avant garde stuff as well.

That would have stacked up very well down here :)

It's honestly not a film I'd give pointers on. Right up my alley so more a case of hoping you get a judging panel with an open mind :)

It's definitely my favourite Frauleins film to date... I think it's just great. Also completely original for a 48HOURS entry as far as I can tell, I don't remember ever seeing anything like it.

Hats off to you. A lesson in how to be charming, original and the opposite of superficial all at once. I hope everyone takes note. Failing that I gues they'll just take notes.

A nice little indicator of what's possible.

Thanks Gregg, sounds like you actually listened to the lyrics then. :)

I did watch it a couple of times and was sometimes affected by the lyrics. When I wondered or tried to rationalize what was affecting me I thought of the voice quality and how easily the parts of this film fuse together to a whole. I can rummage around in my head and find interesting moments. When ball shoots Hitler then in the next moment passes harmlessly though others. The enigmatic rat.

They'd bloody well better be.

Because he enjoyed IAB, I just followed steelpotatoe's recomendation to One Man Army. Being positive about it, I can say it was a very quick (4:46) lesson in just how incomprehensibly eclectic or inexplicably various peoples tastes are.

Back on topic. How about a fully developed three minute version of I am Ball that you give to the internet or MTV.

IAB I thought afterwards was a licence to introduce a succession of compelling themes in very accessible formal code. Like riddles that one already knows the answer to. In a very untricky, transparent way. You give us about, I dunno, maybe 1-1/2 of those themes.

Please do it, and let everyone know you did.

I watch everything Gregg, sorry you find that incomprehensible that I could enjoy films of such varying spectrums. Glad you gave it (One Man Army) a go; I know it has severe flaws flaws, but a charm that to me vastly overrides them :)

Also going back to IAB I think within the confines of the competition and the obvious time demands of compositing meant that 90 seconds sufficed. However like you I did also want more; in all honesty an extension to the range of 3 minutes would have fleshed it out and possible allowed it to progress further.

I thought it was as long as it needed to be.

Any longer and it would have lost its charm.

I could have given the ball more imaginary adventures, and there were fragments of other verses that could have been pretty good, but like you say there was no time for it, and in any case where it ends is where it was always going to end.

I thought it was as long as it needed to be.

I'm happy with it as is, continuing to work on it couldn't improve how I feel, so it would either be a lot of work for nothing or it would make me feel worse about it.

Unless next year I get "sequel" as my genre, and then who knows. Bobby Young bleeding to death on the floor of his apartment (perversely enjoying himself), exploding puppets, a woman living with a stolen child and wracked with guilt at how she got it, and a red ball flying through all these vignettes tying them together with a song.
