City Finalists discussion thread

Hi everyone. These forums are still outrageously quiet, even after today's announcement of the regional finalists. So I'm keen to hear people's reactions, and maybe some analysis.

For starters, a couple of questions: what is the genre break-down across the finalists? What genres are the winners and losers there? Also, what about the ratio of returning finalists versus first-timers? Number-crunchers, go go go.

Interesting to see some heats defo more represented than others, I went to only two (2) heats in Auckland and I've seen 6 of the movies. |

(Future Auckland teams hoping for less competition in Audience fave, change name to something between T-Z, v few finalists from later heats...)

It says in the finalists that they will also play the winner of best school. How do we know who that is? Will the winning team be told so that they can go along too and celebrate?

Congratulations to all of the finalists. Nice work!

I am sure it will change but interesting that only 1 of the 15 Wellington finalists is in the top 10 leaderboard right now.

There were a bunch of genres with overlap potential this year. It'd be pretty easy to do a film that did Crime, Mistaken Identity, Lovers on the Run, Rom Com, and Cat & Mouse for example, without it feeling shoehorned in any way.

I've thought about driving to Hamilton to hand my film in to get into a city finals. But it will be so much more rewarding when I finally get into the Auckland finals.

After 4 years, I've finally made a login. I just wanted to celebrate this by saying something in the forums, so: Something.

I'll add to this a little. The quality of films at the screening I attended this year were much higher than I remember from any screening I've been to before and by all accounts this was the same throughout the competition. Some great teams didn't make the city finals which makes me very excited to watch everybody's films in the screening room, once the national finals are finished. Good luck everybody.

We made our city finals.

I'm pretty sure we're going to be beat by one of the Hastings School teams. lol

I'm confident that we'll take out 'Best Original Song' or best use of Dialogue or something of that nature.

2017 - Team Indeed 'Rock The Night'

Nice one. Just reformatting the CHCH genre info, we get:

3 Mystery Movie
2 Bro or Bechdel Movie
1 Dystopian Movie
1 Real Time Movie
1 Horror
1 One-Location Movie
1 Mistaken Identity Movie
1 Puppet Movie
1 Cat and Mouse Movie
0 Punk Movie
0 Crime Movie
0 Rom-Com Movie
0 Comedy of Errors Movie
0 Lovers on the Run Movie
0 Time Travel Movie

It occurs to me that there a few genres this year that would only work if matched to the right team - Punk and Lovers On The Run for instance. (Which is essentially the argument for/against Musical too I suppose.)

Also, having tackled it ourselves, I'm curious to know what the split was between Bro and Bechdel - do you recall what option those six films each chose?
