Overall, a good night & congratulations to all the winners.
The EntX is a cool venue - very modern but extremely cavernous so the intimacy is kind of lost. As such, it was hard to judge the audience reaction to some films. Not sure if teams got, for example, the volume of laughs they expected.
For me, this was the second time I've seen all of these films so obviously knowing what's coming I focus on at what engages/surprises me during a second viewing, how these finalist films match up against each other and what flaws are more obvious than they were at the Art Gallery.
I was pretty shocked that BORK!'s "Night Shift" didn't at least place. It's a really complete piece of work. I hope it gets picked up nationally.
I thought The Brothers Boyce "All Hallows Eve" was even better the second time through and I can't wait to see it again. I missed a lot the first time around and some of my misgivings I no longer care about! Really high replay value. Really unlucky not to place which I happily mentioned to Michael Wood as I left.
As usual, some of the judging decisions (even for nominees) leave you scratching your head a bit but again, you get that. All good.
You can't really fix the "time-it-takes-for-winners-to-get-to-the-front" unless you tell the winners to sit in the front rows prior. Not really in the spirit of things. Might ruin the suspense.
The sticker thing turned very aptly rather cringe. And, it took a very long time for the "winners" to get to the front. Kind of awkward.
Speeches ranged from one word, to stuttering-spluttering, to quite lovely from Phoebe Hurst.
And a couple of AJ things that made me chuckle:
1) AJ ducking down each time the nominees played. You're not that tall, mate.
2) Hearing AJ's "The Box" story again. Definitely needs to go in the "Finalist Bingo" for 2020.
Excellent to hear CHCH is producing so many reviews compared to the rest of the country. Does speak volumes about the community here.
