I definitely understand where you're coming from, but I'm of two minds about it.
After all, it's not like disqualified films have a chance to win anything other than Best DQ'd, so it's a nice little way to stay inclusive. But then again, having the award under your belt still gives your film some credence, and may even inspire some teams to purposefully not hand their film in because getting Best DQ can give you more visibility than having a flawed film play in the competition. I actually wish I'd thought of that with a couple of my lackluster film before.

DISABLED ACCOUNT 2 is incredible, though being that it was handed in 5 days late, we don't know what it looked like at 7pm on Sunday. Though there were a couple quiet off-camera directions I heard in the version that played, so they didn't pull out all the goofs before sending it in for some reason.

Wellington hasn't played best DQ since 2006 (Naked Pictures - Ghetto Fabulous) and has only done the award twice since then - both times I'm 100% confident the films would have gone on to nationals (Traces of Nut - Half a Horse and Purple Dragons - 48 Hour Famine).

Also in 2 minds whether best DQ should play; normally I lean towards no as I feel the finals should be a celebration of teams that handed in on time but conversely amazing DQ films kind of get buried in the annals of the screening room if there's no recognition.

I agree Mista Teas, I wasn't happy with the Pig Guts film being played at the finals. I know that most of my team felt the same way.

The fact it was 5 days late, not a few hours late, really does not fit with the spirit of the competition. I've got nothing against Pig Guts, I just think it was the wrong decision by Andrew.

Being an OOT for Christchurch I find myself in need of questioning "how does the actual finish line work on the actual at 7pm?" Like physically how?

Is it as I imagine it with teams rushing through some doors in a mad dash before they close? Something like the Indiana Jones hat gag where somebody reaches back under the descending stone door to grab the fallen USB stick?

30mins or an hour I can see as late. I've been there and done that (twice sadly). But 5 days late is enough time to make a whole new film two times over.

What you've outlined is pretty much exactly what happens. There's a door at the back of the room which gets shut at exactly 7pm, if you're in the door you're okay but if your entire body isn't through that door, ya done.

I agree with MistaTeas about A Disabled Account 2, it was a great film, but playing it didn't really feel in the spirit of the competition, felt a bit of a bummer essentially being told "boy you finalists should consider yourselves lucky this got disqualified because it would've done very very well otherwise", idk, it just started the awards off on kind of a strange note.

The only thing that didn't sit well with me at the CHCH final (and I've been stewing over this ever since) was the playing in its entirety of the "Best Disqualified Film". I've seen Incredibly Strange Best Bad Film & the Best School team played before but never a DQ'd film in its entirety. I'm not convinced that a DQ'd film should be part of a finals showcase.

I totally get the reasons why people would feel this way. I'm sure Andrew can speak for himself if/when he surfaces from his Fantastic Fest fever dream, but what I will say is that I think this ought to be viewed as a singular case, rather than adherence or not to a general rule. The way I see it, this is about a specific team's film in a specific year, and in some ways Pigs Guts have been a kind of mascot for Andrew's tenure as city manager, growing in confidence as a team alongside him growing into his manager role. So maybe it's best viewed as a one-off indulgence that our erstwhile city manager has earned?

I don't see how a city manager 'earns' the right to have a 'mascot' team. Surely it's the city managers role to treat all teams as totally equal and not to play favourites.

And I wouldn't have had a problem with this if it had been pitched this way. In fact, Andrew had his "Guilty Pleasure" either award or screening one or two years as I recall. This is cool.

However, Best Disqualified? With no other nominees? And (I repeat) played in its entirety? I don't want to shit on Andrew but before Pigs Guts heat he did open with a long spiel how gutted he was, said they would have made the City final and said they would win Best Disqualified. I was gobsmacked that he would be so transparent. Not cool.

To be clear, these are my words alone. They're of course not actually a 'mascot' team, but he has referenced their growth a number of times over the years as a kind of case study to represent the growth of teams and the CHCH competition in general. So in that light, I guess I'm sort of thinking in terms of... narrative completion? I dunno. And I honestly don't know for sure what I think about the choice to have it play at the Finals (to be sure, the extreme lateness of the submission certainly complicates things a bit). But yeah, just trying to consider a different framing of the matter.
