Yeah, I felt this problem definitely, wanted to pick a really tenuous theme so that it wouldn't give away the twist of the film, but ended up going with one that spoils it, but also fits without the twist when it became less of a twist & more just the next thing that happens in the story..

YES! Totally agree with this. We had the exact same thing. Our best related theme would spoil the ending of our film. We considered choosing another theme that would still work so it wouldn't spoil it as much but ended up sticking to the most applicable theme.

Some genres from previous years were notorious for being spoilers for the story. Shock Ending (especially) End of the World (was an issue for us one year)

So info cards at the end is a good thought and should be considered for the future.

Shock Ending (especially)

Strang Entertainment's Shock Ending movie threaded that needle - set up a bunch of red herrings for the twist, then blindsided you with something completely, genuinely unexpected. Damn that was a good film.

- Is there a team intro award this year?

Yeah I would love to know this as well. Mister Todd??? :) I know CHCH stood alone against the other major cities as the only city to still have an award last year for the best team intro. I hope thats the case again this year :)

Still pushing for an answer...and also for Animation?

Yes I loved that film! Brilliantly handled the shock ending. I was genuinely shocked when that match cut hits you at the end. Was very well done.

Not to be outdone by MistaTeas, I've taken the data of winners & nominations in the Christchurch competition since 2012 and come up with a few interesting tidbits and correlations that I'm going to use to imply causation: ...

This is awesome, I love this wonky stuff. TBALC have made a showing in the city finals quite a respectable number of times, but 4 is our longest streak to date (2007-2010), and we've (ahem) reset the clock this year, so no chance of beating Submission Impossible's lead anytime soon.

Your sample range is interesting, although 2012 was a pretty unusual year in a number of respects for CHCH (still arguably the strongest city final lineup we've ever had). Was there a reason you didn't go back further? Or, if you just do 2013-2017 (i.e. removing 2012), how much does that alter the patterns?

Being nominated for Best Character makes you twice as likely to win/runner up than any other required element

I guess there's a logic to this, since of all the elements this is the one that most likely to be story-relevant, and if you've got an interesting use of the character, you're likely to have an interesting story.

Also worth noting is the amount of Ultra teams that made the finals vs how many signed up:
CHCH: 3/12
AKL: 4/21
WGTN: 4/10
DUN: 1/3
Gisbourne & Taranaki had one Ultra each, both making the finals.

I can't figure out, is this overall a high number of finals-qualifying Ultras or a low number? Any stats on a) how many regular past finalists entered Ultra in each centre, and b) how those that made it / didn't make it to city finals breaks down with whether they're a regular finalist or not?

The only reason I went back to 2012 and no further was that was all the information I could find on the forum! Couldn't find another detailed list of winners and nominees for every category further back than that.
2012 was a strange one, without having seen all of the finalists, it seems like the winner kind of came out of nowhere to win. Wasn't the most nominated, didn't have many of the "big" nominations, only Best Script. It would be interesting to see what patterns present themselves if I went all the way back to 2007 if that info was available.

TBALC definitely have the most appearances at the final and without counting I can pretty confidently state that you'd have the most nominations ever too haha.

With regards to Ultra, I'd say each big centre has one or two sort of regular teams that didn't make the final, most likely due to the curveball thrown by Ultra, but of the teams that you can kind of assume will make the finals almost every year, a lot of them actually still did. Especially in Auckland, their big heavy hitters seem to be getting less favourable reviews, but have still made the finals.

Tangent: I'm still interested to know how Ultra is judged, is it as a sequel or as a stand alone film? Because when you make a sequel to last year's national winner you can pretty safely assume everyone has seen it and just carry on, but when you make a sequel to some obscure film from 6 years ago because your team has never had that much success, you either need to waste time explaining the connection or just ignore it I guess (alrhough does either of those ways make it a bad sequel?)

Also to add to my Ultra stats, Hamilton had one Ultra team which we now know made the finals!

But a big problem for that is having the genre and theme come up before the film plays. I think if genre and theme continue might work better actually having that info AFTER the film finishes?

This reminds of something else I struggled with at the heat I saw - this year with the extra item (theme) added to the title slate, I found them sometimes a bit overwhelming in terms of content (i.e. team name, title, genre, theme, plus sometimes Ultra as well). And especially if the text wasn't well-formatted, and especially especially if it was just things like "Teamname" as opposed to "TEAM: Teamname", it got really hard to read. (And often I'm spending most of the time it's up onscreen just trying to figure out which one is the team name, and which one is the film title...)

I mean sure, it didn't really impact the raw film-viewing experience. But I find that if I know the genre in particular in advance, it can help frame and clarify some of the logic and choices of the film I'm watching.

Yeah this is always a shame. I feel like the biggest 'victim' to this scenario was Film within a Film. I wish that one would come back.

Although wasn't that the genre Eh Team got with "Is Love Enough?"? And if so then I dunno, that genre at least got one pretty much perfect presentation of its concept, which is more than you can say for some other great genres over the years.

Ah yes, so it was! Still, I suppose it remains one of the finest competition examples of the Film Within A Film genre, even if accidentally.

Another good "Film Within a Film" was The Practitioner by Speakerdip Studios, which made Chch finals in 2014, although, like all good Film Within a Film films, it came from a different genre, as it was actually a Shock Ending film.
In fact the only year that Film Within a Film was a genre (2014), none made the Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington or Grand Finals which was unfortunate as I thought it was a really exciting new genre when it was announced, maybe it's one they should bring back?

Just back from the finals. What an amazing bunch of films!

Well deserved win for Free Chicken. Wouldn't be surprised if they took out the whole thing.

What did everyone think of the night?

I'll start: The guy who went up to accept Best Female Character? What a misogynistic douchebag.

In all seriousness, I really fucked up my acceptance speech for that award. I was so surprised by winning anything that I clearly didn't have anything planned. The point I was trying to make was that while writing the character of "A Female" I didn't approach it in any kind of particularly progressive manner or really try to make a statement, I just thought of her as another character and dare I say it... a human being.
My sincerest apologies to anyone that was offended by me and thought the award was wasted on Dragon V Mouse.

I feel like an idiot, I tried to be funny but I should've just stuck to jokes about how a hairy overweight white dude was accepting the award for best female character (on behalf of the wonderful Grace Augustine who is based in Auckland and couldn't make it last night)

But apart from that it was a great night.

Don't actually remember what you said. Just remember being happy for you and your team. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Overall, it was an enjoyable evening & Free Chicken produced a dominating display. Well done to everyone who picked up an award - from City Winner to Best Disqualified.

Andrew put on a great show too. Although there was probably more R13 content from his mouth than from your "Grisly", Richard. :)

Don't sweat it bro. You did fine. But I know what you mean. Our lead actress was nominated and she couldn't attend and I really didn't want to have to be the guy who goes up and accepts the award for best actress in the #morefemales year of 48 hours.

Agreed. I especially liked when after several uses of R rated language he suddenly switched to using "friggin" when announcing the school team award.

Andrew did a fantastic job as always and CHCH is gonna miss him. He's the only manager I've ever known so he's the face of 48 hours for me. All the best Andrew.

I thought it was an awesome final and a great bunch of excellent films all round. I felt there were even up to 5 films that could have been in the top two and thats awesome to see. Great quality. Well done to all the winners and especially Free Chicken and Les Cousins!

Okay, here goes....

The only thing that didn't sit well with me at the CHCH final (and I've been stewing over this ever since) was the playing in its entirety of the "Best Disqualified Film". I've seen Incredibly Strange Best Bad Film & the Best School team played before but never a DQ'd film in its entirety. I'm not convinced that a DQ'd film should be part of a finals showcase.

It's just an observation. I'm interested in your thoughts - CHCH teams or otherwise.

Call me an arse if you will.
