Changes to the Wrap Up Form

I meant to comment on this earlier. There were several new boxes to tick on the wrap up form.
Some was clearly just for their own data (age of team etc), but I liked the survey aspect about when the comp should be held.
Thoughts?

I've been waiting for this to come up actually and meant to say something myself.
It's good that they're welcoming and accepting feedback for the competition, and hopefully gathering the data about when it would be good to hold the competition might help us get the weekend date announced earlier, potentially even at this year's grand final! However, I do sincerely hope that everyone voted NO on Rowan's HORRENDOUS idea of getting rid of the live elements of the comp & putting the whole thing online.

I would have selected 'Hell No'
The live launch and hand in etc is so important. It makes you feel 'important' to have this social element- particularly in the first couple of years of entering.
By putting it into the wrap up form they'd capture loads of useful information from those that are actually involved.

I wonder what the results would look like if the 'live aspects' were split into two voting sections. I know someone who loves seeing the films at a theatre but could care less about the launch and hand in.

There is something about being in a theatre with a bunch of strangers watching 12-13 films, made over a manic weekend - with a lot of questionable quality. There are a lot that if I was sitting at home by myself watching them I wouldn't have finished watching but then I possibly would have also missed some great films that will never make the finals but are damn fun to watch.

The start could go online but I love the hand in panic as the clock counts down. There have been some spectacular finishes in Auckland since we've been doing the comp plus it's nice to catch up with some of the other regular teams or to meet new teams.

2019 "The Drop" - Secret Identity - ULTRA SOLOish
2018 "Furry" - The Wish Movie - ULTRA DUO - Heat 3 runner up Audience Favourite
2017 "The Grove 2: Survival with a vengeance" - Survival ULTRA
2016 "A Baaaaad Habit" - Bro Movie
2015 "Barry's World" - Other Dimension - Best Animation Auckland region
2014 "Brick Impact" - Race Against the Clock - Auckland Finalist - Heat 5 runner up Audience Favourite
2013 "Frankie goes to Horrorwood" - Horror - Heat 6 - runner up Audience Favourite
2012 "Brick's Quest" - Fantasy Adventure - Heat 8 - Audience Favourite
2011 "Playin the Game" - Mystery
2010 " Syd's Garage - a study in Autoeroticism" - Musical - Heat 4 - Audience Favourite
2009 "Doggone" - Family Movie (was a doggone waste of time)
2008 "Sounds of Romance" - Romance
2007 "The Grove" - Crime - Auckland finalist, best script award

Oh man even the notion of getting rid of the live elements is enough to make my skin crawl. What a shit idea. I get that HP is a tech company and wants to flex their tech muscles, but this comp would be useless to me and a lot of other competitors without the live aspect. Running into old mates, new collaborators and the instant feedback of the crowd are all super important, if I were in this to get a film made in a weekend to stick online I'd just do that (and many of us do already!).

On that front, can we have fewer texts from HP? Drove me crazy.

I loved the support from HP this year. We got a dinner on Friday night (although 11pm was a bit late. Most of it ended up as leftovers for Saturday's lunch because we'd already had dinner) and lunch + snacks on Sunday. Maybe being in a central location helps your chances to win? I'm a little upset we didn't get to kill Guy Williams but there's always next year.

If there are teams in a reasonable distance from the city, who respond immediately and never get anything, its simply not fair. I would have loved it too if it worked for me, but it didn't, that gives teams like yours an unfair advantage. I'm sure there are teams that would have had even less of a chance to get anything out of it than mine. A bag with some chocolate and a first aid kit would have been infinitely more advantageous to loads of teams than random texts that resulted in nothing for us.

I like the idea of the support crew, but unless it actually supports every team that asks for support its unfair. I know life's not fair, but in this instance it could be fair and it feels outside of the spirit of the competition to me, so I am going to bitch about it until everyone agrees with me.

Getting this data at any other time would be a nightmare but hopefully it will be used to draw a more diverse crowd to enter.

I loved the support from HP this year.

I agree, I thought they did an awesome job as sponsors. I actually think this year was the best contribution from the naming sponsor in the 7 years since I started participating.

I even found myself starting to think of Hewlett-Packard as a "cool" company. If that isn't a clear example of sponsorship done right, I don't know what is.

Suggestion: an opt-out for the texts perhaps?

As for launch and hand in, it needs to be bigger if anything. I was a solo team (in Auckland) this year so maybe I had a different experience. It was good but there could have been even more done.

This did not come from our sponsors
They love the live aspect.
This was more to do with reality of running the comp.

I totally agree with you, although unlike you, we were based in central Auckland.
We didn't get anything. It was our first time so it was a little bit discouraging to not have much support. I feel like having to reply to those texts was a waste of time.
I mean, there were over 160 teams in Auckland and the amount of freebies they gave out was only a small fraction of that!
I guess they'll just have to take it as a learning experience and do better next year.
Great idea, but they needed more.

We got fed on Saturday and the HP support crew were really nice and it was a great touch. I think it was great.

I was quite surprised by the lack of goody bag at the start line, but if that's what it takes to keep the challenge sustainable then so be it.

Having thought about it a bit more, I guess the freebies are just extras. They don't actually say on the website: "You will all receive freebies from the HP support team".

I'm guessing you weren't at the opening, the support team was a replacement for the bag of goodies that was provided every other year, so yeah those who didn't get anything were missing out on something in favor of other people getting something.

Yeah fair enough. A warning not to buy a USB would have been nice. I guess what I'm trying to say is, the support team was a nice idea that didn't pan out for everyone so I don't think it deserves praise just yet. Maybe with a little work to even the playing field but as a team who tried their best to get assistance from them it felt like wasted energy.
