Cast and Crew Size

How many people are involved in your teams?
Which role is the hardest to fill?
Which role is most under-rated/over-rated?

I've always tried to keep the number of cast down- makes wrangling easier. This year we'll be at 4 or 5 I think.
Our crew seems to be growing. This year we have producer, cameraman/editor, sound, make-up (this is a new position for us) and catering, plus a music guy.

Is 'catering' for five the local Pizza Hut? Also no director? Brave.

How many people are involved in your teams?
About two useful people and about five to seven others that slow filming down, talk while recording audio and go to bed early. We've also had issues with team members becoming 'distracted' with the female talent.

Which role is the hardest to fill?
A good writer. Someone who can come up with something achievable yet interesting enough for 48Hours. There are countless camera ops and editors but without a story it's just nice pictures. A lot of teams including ours suffer from either no writer or a bad one.

Which role is most under-rated?
Producer or Sound. Usually you only get noticed if something goes wrong in those roles. Also a lot of people have nice fancy camera gear but no sound gear, so anyone that can bring decent sound equipment is a treasure.

Which role is most over-rated?
Hard question... There's so few roles on our team usually there isn't room for an over-rated role. I'll have to think about that one.

How many people are involved in your teams?

We actually have quite a large team, with certain people coming and going over the years. I think this year we have 16 people floating around, pretty sure we've had more before. The more the merrier!

Which role is the hardest to fill?

SOUND. Probably the most unpopular role in all of film production, it's hard enough to find someone who wants to do it, let alone find the equipment, and I'm a little embarrassed to say it's clearly the missing piece of our film each year.
ACTORS. We're all pretty much comfortable with being on camera, but we only have one or two people each year who are actors first.
HOME BASE. Not exactly a "role", but it's pretty hard to find a place to hang out with <20 people each year. We've managed so far, still looking out for this year though.

Which role is most under-rated/over-rated?

UNDER-RATED. Gotta be the producer, at least in terms of overall external acknowledgement. We've had amazing producers who do so much of the work that all the creative minds are too distracted to do. I'd also give a shout-out to all the people on our team who don't have specific jobs, but find some way to contribute.
OVER-RATED. Hmmm... Not sure one exists? The title of director can be pretty interchangeable between a few of our team members, as long as we've all got the same vision. But I wouldn't describe that as over-rated.

I'm not to sure on our teams final number as of yet for this year. We are currently at 8 crew members and counting. We may have up to 20 cast and crew members by the shoot weekend. But in saying that I have worked with crews ranging from 3-22 people over the years.

As most of us here on the forum know from our years of experience Story and Audio are king in 48hours and I'm glad to say I have a talented designated writing team for this year. (Thank god as this does my head in every year.)

As for audio I own my own basic audio kit but this is unhelpful if the operator is mud. Lol Even the professional world of film have trouble filling the roll of audio recordist at the best of time.

As for people wanting to pike out and leave early I've only found this to be the actors in my case which is alway frustrating, as trying to get them to come back on the Sunday to do pick ups can be a nightmare.

I think the short days this shoot weekend is going to catch out a lot of teams with real daylight hours being around 9am-4.30pm at that time of the year.

I think Music is actually another underrated role. Kevin MacLeod is great and all, but you can always recognize familiar tracks. Nothing beats having an original score.

My past cast has varied radically. I think you can do well by assigning roles such as catering and props as this helps you to cover off details that you might miss.

This year I have an Asst Director, 2 camera crew, 5 actors and (same as you) new make-up role.

Still seeking sound, lighting and music people if there's anyone wanting to join a team.
