April 48hours? Better or worse?

In our team we had a big chat over the weekend about how we just didn't feel ready this year for 48 hours. Many other teams I talked to at the launch all said boy this has really snuck up on me this year and also felt unprepared.

Then In CHCH anyways I noticed some noticeable big names missing. Not sure if the date change was a factor but just curious what others peoples thoughts were. I have decided now that I prefer May. But thats cos I'm a teacher and that gives me the school holidays to start thinking about 48 hours and get all my gear out again etc.

So what do you guys think? April or May? Yay or Nay?

I much prefer the April slot.
It may have caught people out this year, but if it was a regular shift then it shouldn't again in the future.
I'm fairly certain (but not 100%) that I got emails letting me know about the dates.
I would have thought that most teams knew it was on, but whether they could organise themselves for April etc who knows.
Liking the Facebook page is a good way to keep in touch, without being overly onerous.
The longer day, the more reliable weather, the extra hour (this year anyway), makes it a simple choice. April.

It's so difficult to know whether it's better to be during daylight savings hours or not. On the one hand, if you're night shooting then you don't have to wait so long for dark on Saturday (which was the case two years ago for us). On the other hand, if you need more daylight hours...

I thought it was great to have settled weather that wasn't too cold (although we were shooting in Kapiti so I'm not sure what it was like in town).

May is always a little quieter at work so I think I prefer that slot a little more.

I want to say that an extra month to prepare would be great but the reality is I scramble to ready regardless of when in the year the contest is.

I do know that I wouldn't want it on a daylight savings weekend again, I still feel like we somehow cheated by getting 49 hours, it's just not the same.

Hi Clayton, It's an interesting question. Last year many were unhappy with May weather and pushing for an earlier date, hence it was probably one of the drivers for the April date. Although looking at today in Wellington, we're all just thankful this crappy rain and wind didn't come 3 days earlier!
On reflection I think the first weekend in April is a bit too soon, plus it is always Daylight saving weekend and it would be horrible if the comp had to be renamed as 49 Hours.
If there was going to be a vote process, I'd say that Schools should get double voting rights as that's where our Film Makers of the future need to be fostered (little pun there, aye Morgan). In a way, you did have most of T1 to get prepared, but that's on the assumption that you know by December prior as to what the date is going to be.
So, for me, 2nd or 3rd weekend in April would be fine, depending on where Easter might fall, or those same weekends in May.

I would prefer later in May - all the summer sports/weddings/sun-related-activities are almost over by then so it is easier to get team members to commit to the weekend!

We were definitely a lot less prepared this year, however I prefer the new April shooting weekend regardless.

Almost every other year the weather has been awful and that has had a truly massive impact on the films and it makes scheduling the shooting really difficult.

Good weather is so, so important.

I reckon as long as they keep it in April, people will be much more prepared next year. People always complain about change - next year once people are more used to it I reckon the benefits will seem a lot more obvious.

It conflicts with NAB, also it's dangerously close to my wedding anniversary and my oldest child's birthday!!

That said, I like the better weather and longer daylight hours, so there that. I'd even be happy with slightly earlier, in mid-late March (just trying to get it further away from those conflicts)

April - Better
Can never guarantee but weather was better. Offered more options for outdoor / indoor. Doesn't have to be the daylight savings weekend.
Prepared?... Once again, grabbed my daughters camera (better than mine), my friends microphone, I don't have one. And borrowed works tripods and lights. I contributed a clap board this year. Wooden spoons just didn't cut it last year.

April is far better than dark cold May. (March of February would be even better IMHO.)

The only downside of April this year was that we weren't expecting it, which caused a bit of planning chaos for some.

I was glad for 49 hours and it's a good time being almost the school holidays for us teachers and school teams. I would be keen to see it on either the first or second weekend of the April school holidays, whichever one is not Easter that year. Means that the school kids and teachers could get organised easier/not be so wrecked on the Monday.

Not that that helps the other professions, but there are lots of teachers and students!

I like the better weather too, although the last time I did this was 2008, haha :)

I preferred May. The wet weather wasn't a problem, we incorporated it into the story. More time to prep as well with school teams, and fundraise.

Congratulations, or commiserations - who can say?

I've also managed to have three children within that time, and still not missed a 48HOURS.

I think there's something wrong with me.

I gotta say, it was harder for us this year. Our regular camera people (both professionals in their own right) were required for shooting at weddings. Also, we were HUGELY busy at work due to end of financial year. I realise there are probably not many small business owners who also compete in 48 Hours, but take into account that in May these business people are probably much more open to offering sponsorship or permission to film locations or time off work or other things. I hope we don't have to do it again over the daylight savings changeover - this is 48 Hours, not 49 Hours - and it did seem a little bit like... cheating.

TLDR: Later in the year please.

Due to frustrations with double booking school vans etc, which ended up costing us an extra $400 for transport for the weekend, i have already made bookings for the same weekend next year.
