Animations 2015

Hi everyone!

It would be great to get a thread going to see all the films and teams who did animations this year - we’ve seen a couple of excellent ones in the screening room, but it would be cool to see them all in one place.

This is our entry this year -'Let’s Play' sorry in advance if the song gets stuck in your head.

Sam your animation was incredible. Please keep doing things like this. Me and my brother were pissing ourselves the whole time but that scene with the screaming skeleton made it for me. I can't explain why. Consider me spooked.

Lovely bongo drums, yours was fantastic. Was great to see it on the big screen. Can't wait to see what you do next year.

Awesome work by your team this year, Sam. The style is great, and the sheer number of shots you guys did is pretty impressive. Loved all the details in the expression and the effects work!

Amazing work! I could listen to that song all day. Not sure if that's a good thing. Loved Pallo too, though when I heard Harper's voice I was expecting Peter Pan to show up. Then I remembered Peter Pan's not going to be there, duh.

Just watched 'Pallo', and while I know basically nothing about how to animate, what I can deduce is that a truck load of work (and quite possibly the truck was one of those big Aussie road-train thingys- not a Jason Gunn Thingy) went into making it.
It was very very cool. Nice work Squint

What software do all of you use for these animations ?
I've always wanted to have ago at this sort of animation.

I just did another one of my war stop motion animations for our team intro this year. I would run out of time if I tried it for the main competition.

We shot on a Canon 5DMKIII, using a live window feed via the EOS Utility on a 27" screen in order to double check lighting and focus.

We shot RAW and processed in Lightroom. Using after effects, we created a 4K master prores file with all scenes joined crudely together. Took that into premiere and placed it on an HD timeline, where due to the 4K resolution, we effectively had double the amount of shots if needed by scaling the footage to either 50% or 100%... or thereabouts to get the composition we needed. It's pretty rough, but our first attempt at stop motion during 48hours.

Our backgrounds were done in Photoshop, the characters in Illustrator and the animation with Toon Boom Harmony. It was a bit of a trail run for us too, as we hadn't used Harmony for animation before, but it was great for doing quick character rigs and is vector-based, so it works well with Illustrator.

but our first attempt at stop motion during 48hours

Lordbiggus - For a first attempt during 48 hours it was super clean and well done! Doing anything frame-by-frame in 48 hours must be a mission and a half!

Thanks, I have illustrator photoshop and adobe flash, currently knowing nothing about this type of animation would that be a similar workflow ?

Coming from more of a camera/real world background I'm not at all familiar with this stuff,I'm still really into it, but the idea of being able to do even simple animation short films sounds quite fun.

You have to organise actors and locations, props all that stuff, but with animation it's something I could do largely in my own time.

Will have to look up some tutorials.

Haven't personally used Flash, but the Photoshop/Illustrator/Flash combo for 2D animation is very common, and I assume they integrate with each other nicely as they're all Adobe. I'm sure you'll find a lot tutorials and information online for working between them.

This book is also super useful as a guide/reference for animation principals and goes pretty in-depth into things like walk-cycles etc.

By the way thought you animation was really cool

Thanks! Just checked out your stop-motion intro, pretty cool too! I'm sure you'll find that some of the processes/ideas you think about with stop-motion will carry over to digital animation. Goodluck!
