A Plea for Reviews

If you are one of the unfortunate individuals whom not many people cared to review your film after you've put it in the screening room you can post your links here.

I'll go first.

I'm thinking it might be a cool idea to post this sort of link in the screening room as well, because the comments there don't seem to get used by anyone

So we can upload our films even though the award nominees haven't been announced yet?

Yep, it's been confirmed in another thread that it's all good to upload if you're not a finalist.

Now, if only they'd just release the nominations and then no one would have to worry about it anymore... ;)

Reviewed it, I agree, its a top film, yet its not a finalist, so the chosen 12 from Auckland better be absolute superstars. Regarding being snubbed, I assume you don't owe Ant any money and you have not slept with someone inadvisable?? ;-)

Word on the grape vine is we have to enter another 9 times, then we'll be considered. Just a shame though, not from my point of view. I thought the team did a great job and am gutted they didn't get a look in.

Yeah man, otherwise how do you think they can afford all those expensive awards? Gotta pay the bills and pay your dues ;-)

Seriously though, I wouldn't be surprised to see the film nominated for a category award, your use of the prop was central to the story. Makeup was a top effort as well. Plus the script was great.

And you never know, I heard Peter Jackson quite likes horror ;-)

Yeah, if there's any correlation there it's only that teams that have been around for 10 years have 1) lots of experience of the competition and 2) probably a bit of other film-making experience (stands to reason at least, as they are the people enthusiastic enough about film to still be going after a decade). We made the national final 4th year in, dipped out for a couple of years, came back, missed out, etc. ... it's a super-variable thing.

As a regional judge last year (in Chch) I don't think I'm spilling any secrets to say like all assessment of art it's a subjective process, so there's every chance the judges loved your film but just felt they quite couldn't fit into the final 12. (12 out of, what, 240 is hard going!)

Curious why they reduced the number of finalists for auckland this year, considering there are more entrants than ever and last year there were 16 finalists.

Meanwhile in Gisborne, half the contestants are finalists.

Maybe we should move to the provinces ?

What's more important to you, being in the top twelve or having a chance to make a great film (which by the sounds of it, you did)? Child Jumpers by Grand Cheval won the entire competition on their first entry.

2015: Loyal Buddy Film Wellington City Winner, National Runner-Runner Up, National Best Actor/Editor - Actor, Composer, Writer

Child Jumpers by Grand Cheval won the entire competition on their first entry. Please don't get patronising about other provinces or you'll end up turning people off you and your work. I've seen amazing stuff come out of small regions.

No one said otherwise, of course good work can come from anywhere, and films from all over the place make it to the grand final. But you have to admit, this arrangement puts a lot of extra competitive demand on main centre filmmakers. Maybe thats a good thing? It's not my competition to run, and I realise there is a practical limit on the number of films that could be shown in a night before everyone dies of boredom ;-)

But the fact is we had 16 in Auckland, now we have 12.

Well, like most people, I suppose I want both ;-)

But I guess I'd rather make a great film and miss out than make a really crap film and get in by accident somehow. That would be embarrassing!

Hmm, I thought that Auckland used to have 12 finalists too, but then they raised it a few years back. Am I just imagining that?

And with all due respect to the smaller centres, being a city finalist in Gisborne is not the same as being a city finalist in Auckland, for sheer numeric reasons if nothing else. Personally I prefer to view 48HOURS as two parallel (but connected) competitions - the regional and the national. To me the city final is a climax and a highlight in itself, and then there is this quite separate national thing, with slightly different parameters.

Also, bear in mind that the national finalist selection used to work quite differently, with the winner from each region guaranteed to go through, alongside a handful of PJ wildcards. And I think that pretty much everyone would agree that the way things are now is a much better (or at least fairer) model.

Yes, it used to be 12, then it was raised to 13 or 14, then last year 16, now back to 12. But the number of entrants has grown each year AFAIK.

I'm guessing the final got too long with 16. Maybe they should split auckland into NorthShore and SouthSide ;-)

But I think I'd hate to run a competition like this, I bet it's a thankless task with loads of armchair critics. Meanwhile, the organisers are probably just trying to work out how to pay the bills and fill the venues on the night!!
