2018 Recurring Themes

Curious to see, once the heats get going, what the weird recurring themes and obvious uses of elements are this year.

Also curious to see:
- How many "Back From The Dead" movies AREN'T zombie films
- How many "Fish Out Of Water" films are about literal fish out of water (esp. Ultra films)
- How many Technological Thrillers are very clearly informed by BLACK MIRROR
- How many teams' puddles are puddles of bodily fluids of some sort
- What genres Musical teams decided to pair with (based on the films listed on the reviews site already, it seems Monster is the winner)
- How many teams put an element or their genre in their title (a perennial favourite)

Having watched all of Chch, I didn't actually pick up on too many recurring moments- there's certainly nothing as bizarre as everyone using the Wilhelm Scream as a ringtone, and maybe that's because the elements were so subtle this year.

The most common thing I noticed among all the films was showing the puddle in close up, with someone walking through it, or driving through it, which, while being cliche imagery, really wasn't that egregious. Outside of that, 90% of puddles were either water, urine or blood.

As for Musicals, we had 2 Heist musicals and 2 fish-out-of-water musicals (in the same heat too) but everyone else who got musical paired it with something different.

Where are all the audience favourite awards for the heats that have played so far?

We probably cliched a few things in our film but we also tried to push the wish genre in a direction I haven't seen before. We think it's hilarious, be interested to see what others think of it once it plays

2019 "The Drop" - Secret Identity - ULTRA SOLOish
2018 "Furry" - The Wish Movie - ULTRA DUO - Heat 3 runner up Audience Favourite
2017 "The Grove 2: Survival with a vengeance" - Survival ULTRA
2016 "A Baaaaad Habit" - Bro Movie
2015 "Barry's World" - Other Dimension - Best Animation Auckland region
2014 "Brick Impact" - Race Against the Clock - Auckland Finalist - Heat 5 runner up Audience Favourite
2013 "Frankie goes to Horrorwood" - Horror - Heat 6 - runner up Audience Favourite
2012 "Brick's Quest" - Fantasy Adventure - Heat 8 - Audience Favourite
2011 "Playin the Game" - Mystery
2010 " Syd's Garage - a study in Autoeroticism" - Musical - Heat 4 - Audience Favourite

Guilty as charged for this one, but in all fairness Heist School Musical was too good to pass up, and could quite well be the best part of our film, lol. Literally the only year that we've had a title we liked on Friday night and not just picked a random word or something as we fill out the wrap form on Sunday night.

Will have to keep an eye out for these trends in Taranaki final... I think I may be the only local on these forums, haven't seen many others. But living vicariously through Dunedin and everyone else who has their heats before our final, haha, so keep the updates coming!

I was going to have a big puddle of poo and blood splattered blood all over the inside of one of the toilets at school, but my brain stopped working at some point in the weekend and I never used the shot-opted for one with just blood I think. I then found the caretaker graciously cleaning the toilet the next day after my attempt at spending a few hours at it on Sunday. I owe him.

Definitely literal fish out of water seems to be a recurring theme. It's something we brainstormed as our additional genre but quickly abandoned because of that time we made a literal cat and mouse tale.

Our heat had a fair few monster movies that went for straight up horror, which is a shame because I love the spectacle of a monster movie much more than the jump scares of a horror.

In wellington we have a boat load of films that open with someone running through a puddle. We're also amazed about how many teams filmed outside and in interesting locations - its fantastic. We've seen lots of 'afterlife' back from the dead films, and monster movies have been really strong - High school films have produced a lot of adults pretending to go back to high school...

So many people getting hit by cars in CHCH.
Lots of vlogging too.
And plenty of "Meet the Team" montages with Heist films complete with titles such as "The Muscle".

You may be pleased to know that thus far there haven't actually been too many V Cans lying around (3 heats still to go in ChCh so potential for that to change). The ones that have included V have been pretty on the nose about it - "It's the V making them crazy!" or "Would you like some V? The one I'm holding in my hand?" lol

I have noticed a lot of films about boys unable to talk to girls, and then when they finally do the girl falls for him simply for being brave enough to talk to her.

Lots of puddles being splashed by a foot. All framed and shot the exact same way too

And yes, a lot of people being hit by cars.

Lots of school teams depicting txting on screen, the cellphone use amount the school teams is quite telling too.

Lots of teams embracing the Swede style to great effect too

Original Score for the win yet again. (I really like that song, so it'd doubly be a bummer to have it spoiled by a bunch of shorts misusing it.)
