2015 Genre Stats

Hey guys, these forums are sufficiently quiet at the moment that I felt compelled to do some quick (and possibly questionable) analysis of the audience favourites by genre for the heats that have screened so far. Popular vote is of course no guarantee of quality (although I'm often pleasantly surprised by how discerning audiences can be in their choices) but meh, them's the only data we got.

Okay, so 21 heats so far. Looking just at the first-place-getters, here's how it breaks down:

3 wins - Buddy Movie, Rom-Com, Mystery, Musical/Dance/Beach Party/Rockumentary (14.3% each)
2 wins - Cat & Mouse, Mistaken Identity, Other Dimension Movie (9.5% each)
1 win - Last Person On Earth, Black Comedy, Shock Ending (4.8% each)
no wins - Science Gone Mad, Horror

Note that all three Musical wins are from Auckland, as are both Mistaken Identity wins. 2 of 3 Mysteries are from Wellington and 2 of 3 Buddy Movies are from Christchurch.

Now, bringing in all three top voted places, it falls out like this:

Buddy Movie - 8 (12.7%)
Rom-Com - 8 (12.7%)
Musical - 7 (11.1%)
Mystery - 6 (9.5%)
Mistaken Identity - 6 (9.5%)
Black Comedy - 6 (9.5%)
Shock Ending - 6 (9.5%)
Cat & Mouse - 5 (7.9%)
Science Gone Mad - 3 (4.8%)
Horror - 3 (4.8%)
Other Dimension - 3 (4.8%)
Last Person On Earth - 2 (3.2%)

From this, it starts to look like some of the high-concept genres have been catching people out this year.

And breaking it down by centre, it looks like this (including all three place-getters):

AUCKLAND (8 heats so far):
4 - Musical (16.7%)
3 - Rom-Com, Mystery, Mistaken Identity (12.5% each)
2 - Science Gone Mad, Black Comedy, Other Dimension, Shock Ending (8.3% each)
1 - Buddy Movie, Cat & Mouse, Last Person On Earth (4.2% each)
0 - Horror

WELLINGTON (7 heats so far):
4 - Buddy Movie
3 - Cat & Mouse, Rom-Com, Mistaken Identity, Black Comedy
2 - Mystery, Musical
1 - Shock Ending
0 - Science Gone Mad, Horror, Last Person On Earth, Other Dimension

CHRISTCHURCH (6 heats so far):
3 - Buddy Movie, Horror, Shock Ending
2 - Rom-Com
1 - Science Gone Mad, Cat & Mouse, Mystery, Last Person On Earth, Musical, Black Comedy, Other Dimension
0 - Mistaken Identity

Okay, that's all I've got for now. As a disclaimer, this is a fairly small data-set, so any apparent trends should be taken with a grain of cinematic salt.

....Are you a wizard?

It doesn't surprise me that Buddy Movie is the cream of the crop, it's a fun genre that allows for a lot of great stories, though that being said I've only seen a couple that have resonated with me.

The same can be said for Musical, a genre which either results in the best films of the competition or the worst films of the competition. Maybe the added options of beach party/rockumentary have tipped the scales this year.

I'd love to see Black Comedy get more love, it's such a creative catalyst for storytelling that is harder to pull off anywhere else. So far the best, and probably only great Black Comedy I've seen is Clean Getaway by Chillybox.

Yeah, I'd agree. Buddy Movie and Rom-Com are both almost necessarily character-driven, which tends to lead to stories that an audience is more likely to engage with. By contrast, teams probably have to work harder with the gimmick-based genres like Science Gone Mad, Other Dimension and Last Person On Earth to find a story that goes beyond just abstract ideas.

Of course, if a team can deliver great story and great characters, while still landing one of those curve-ball genres, then the results could be awesome.

(Well it took a while to get our heads around Mystery (we were still brainstorming potential story ideas well after midnight), but I think the final result scrubbed up okay. Of course, you never know for sure til you see it with an audience (tonight! eeee!). Plus we had a crapload of fun making it, which to my mind is the far more important metric.)

(If we post in parentheses, no one else can hear us, right?)

I'm surprised comedy horror isn't doing better, as we've seen some great funny scary winners previously.

Non-comedy horror is always polarising...

Although that in itself could be the reason why. Look at mockumentaries, for instance. For a while there a few years back, teams were coming out with some terrific mockumentary entries (Brown Peril and Bruised Gold, for instance). But then I think we reached Peak Mockumentary, it became viewed as a bit passé, and a film needs to be really special to overcome that mockumentary fatigue.

Personally, I'm always impressed when a 48HOURS Horror film can genuinely scare me as opposed to pulling its punches in the service of comedy. Which is probably why I loved last year's Flicker so much (okay, technically that one was of the "Time Travel" genre, but still, chilling).

I was thinking this year when watching some of the heats that what we have now shifted to from mockumentaries is this sort of sub-48HRS-genre that is goes along the lines of "Character X has wacky syndrome Y" or "Character X is a top proponent of wacky activity Z". Goes along largely mockumentary in style but maybe not quite with all the trappings.

Okay, so I assume all the heats have been done now, yeah? So if I've added things up right, we've got 53 heats in total, and 160 top audience vote picks. The totals look like this:

1st, 2nd and 3rd places combined:

Musical 12.50%
Rom Com 11.88%
Cat & Mouse 11.88%
Mystery 10.00%
Buddy 10.00%
Mistaken Identity 8.13%
Black Comedy 8.13%
Horror 6.88%
Other Dimension 6.25%
Last Person On Earth 5.63%
Science Gone Mad 4.38%
Shock Ending 4.38%

1st place only:

Rom Com 16.67%
Musical 14.81%
Mystery 12.96%
Cat & Mouse 11.11%
Buddy 9.26%
Mistaken Identity 7.41%
Black Comedy 7.41%
Other Dimension 7.41%
Last Person On Earth 5.56%
Horror 3.70%
Science Gone Mad 1.85%
Shock Ending 1.85%

It's perhaps not surprising that there isn't that much variation in the first list, since getting one of the top three places in a heat isn't that unlikely for any given genre. Huge variation in the heat winners though, from 16.67% for Rom-Com right down to just 1.85% for Shock Ending.

Also, interesting that the placing of genres virtually doesn't change when comparing the lists. Horror going from #8 to #10 is the biggest change, and no other genre changes by more than one place.

Of course, all of this data is based upon the voting whims of audiences. City finalists should give us some more robust indication of where the real quality is coming from, genre-wise, so it'll be interesting to see how well that does or doesn't line up with these numbers.

So gotta say, not totally surprised that Shock Ending is languishing, because as a genre it's a bit of a hospital pass to get when everyone watching your shock ending film knows that, er, there will be a shock at the end. High degree of extra difficulty.

Luck of the draw I guess. Sucks to get shock ending, especially when the compulsory prop element is bread. Ya just know that it's gonna be something about gluten free.
