Cameras 2014

I guess the horse has bolted on this a bit but I'm sitting on the train so why not...

You can shoot a short on anything and people do I guess - from smartphones to pro production cameras. And yes, yes, the camera doesn't make the film, all too true. Bottom line this is a bit of a camera geek thread because you can certainly make a great looking film with e.g. a 550D and 50mm 1.8, or less.

But I suspect a lot of competitors will fall into the DSLR (and likely Canon) type middle range, and also possess a hankering for gadgetry. We have to type this stuff on the hand in forms but I've never seen the stats - curious about that.

Anyway, for the DSLR level enthusiastic amateur types, there's a bit going on in the camera market at the moment - Canon seem to be sitting fairly still while micro 4/3s are getting more interesting, Black Magic is shaking things up, the GH4 and the new Sony (what's that, the 7s or something) look wicked, etc etc.

I'm a Canon user myself but primarily on the basis of Codec export quality, sound inputs etc was vaguely considering a trade in after this comp.

Wondering what others are thinking or doing....

wasn't a certain line of dialogue missing from the FR short this time?

I texted him about that on the Friday night and it hadn't even occurred to him that finally, for the first time, it'd actually make sense to have that line.

I thought you guys (Dylan) were robbed in the audience favourite in Heat 6

I don't know about "us guys", I'm pretty happy to have got 3rd in the heat and Dylan's short was a bit lacklustre so not surprised he didn't place this year. You can't win 'em all.

That's because he's basically talking shit. It's true that it's all borrowed, but it's about 195000% easier for him to borrow that gear than for you or I to do so. He's balls deep in the industry.

That is absolutely true. I've been making TV for a decade - I know a lot of people, and have a bunch of industry friends.

The downside, of course, is that things can dry up suddenly too - until two days before the competition I actually had a whole different camera kit arranged, but that went away when someone wanted to pay to rent it instead.

In the past I've had crew drop out the day before on getting a real gig, equipment turn up missing vital bits (ask for the camera, but forgot to specify some important accessory).

Talking of balls (and hijacking my own thread) - wasn't a certain line of dialogue missing from the FR short this time? Or did I blink & miss it. FWIW I thought you guys (Dylan) were robbed in the audience favourite in Heat 6.

Indeed, somehow it had escaped my attention. Morgan did mention it to me, and others on the team had started talking about it. Ultimately we didn't feel it was going to fit in the story we went with - although we had thought of was to incorporate it in other stories we considered.

On borrowing stuff, I'm happy enough with my camera situation so as not to feel too jealous but wouldn't mind being able to borrow sound gear because renting it is a bit annoying...

I've been all over the place with sound gear. From having a full on Sound Devices multi-channel mixer/recorder and Timecode slate for Professional Dancer, to running a single shotgun and one radio mic straight into the camera (this year).

Usually we'd get a least a decent boom pole, shotgun mic and basic mixer. Sometime we have a radio mic or two (but don't often end up using them).

Again it's all borrowed.

Back to cameras, this thread is pretty inconclusive. I guess the gist of the small sample above is that the DSLR guys are getting on with it and if you're into more serious hardware chances are you might already be shooting on something more fully featured for video. Personally I guess before I get anything that shoots at a higher data rate I would probably need to get a new computer as well which I can't really be bothered with (afford/justify). So, Wait and See.

I think ultimately in a competition like this the camera, and certainly the codec, aren't that important. Decent operation is where it falls down far more often. A well shot film made with a $700 HDV handycam is going to look better than a constantly-out-of-focus film made with a RED Epic and Cooke Primes (although that seems unlikely to happen).

The thing that I found most jarring in the shorts I saw was terrible out of focus or overexposed shots, and also image stabilization going crazy.

I don't think ours was audience favourite material this year. Lacked the sort of hooks that are usually popular in that context. But I'm actually really happy with it as a story on it's own after the fact - I think it stands pretty well as a little short on it's own without requiring the context of 48HOURS, which is nice.

e.g. balls hooked on a barbed-wire fence, apparently.

All too true. Hey I did say this was a gadget geek thread ;-)

p.s. why don't I read the instructions. Only just figured this out by accident, so just for anyone else that hasn't noticed:

I shot with the trusty EX1r this year again, it gives great audio but I'm starting to wish I could upgrade to something with the Super 35mm sensor and more bit depth especially after seeing how much more professional Sideways film looked.
I know, I know story first and it doesn't matter but well, yeah.
