Obligatory post, because it's been more than two days since the last one in this thread, and the whole forums is much too quiet. Also, I shall wear a sparkly bow tie tomorrow night. That is all.

I actually think DramaMike had said "Noise & Pictures" would win the national title after the Wellington final.

Provincialism alive and well - all good!

I think the rest of the country always needs to watch out for Auckland. At least you're never afraid to say it.

Although to be fair, Wellington do have the past two years as evidence to back up their fighting talk.

Indeed I did.
I picked last year's win and I stand by my pick again this year.
I thought there were 4 very impressive Wellington films at the finals, but 'Rubble' is smart, extremely well executed and powerful. I rate it highly.

I know its impossible to pick when I haven't seen the other centres, but for one to beat 'Rubble' its gonna have to be fricken incredible. The noises coming out of Auckland suggest they are confident too. Bodes well for the comp as a whole!

I've tried to push it this week: Have invited the entire staff at my school (100+) and all my ex-film students I still have contact with.

Quite hard to get non-48HR to buy into it though...

I recommend booking ahead but at this stage door sales are likely. About 80 left. Bring as many people as you can!

I'm getting pretty pumped about it all now.

Well yes and no. Yes because there are some fantastic shorts (and better every year), but no because they're mainly from teams we've all already heard of*, which is a real shame. I mean I'm not saying the comp is exactly stagnating, but it would be nice if things were really shaken up.

* at least in Auckland, maybe the other centres' finals are heavily populated with newcomers, but not up here.

I do notice a lot of familiar names in Auckland.

For shits and giggles, this year the Chch finalists were:
3 previous winners
3 other previous finalists
6 first-time finalists, including one first-time team

2013:
0 previous winners
6 previous finalists
6 first-time finalists, including 2 first-time teams

2012:
2 previous winners
5 previous finalists
1 previous Wellington finalist
4 first-time finalists including 1 first-time team

2011:
2 previous winners
5 previous finalists
5 first-time finalists, all first-time teams

I don't have the kind of spreadsheet I expect you have, but I've just run through the last few years of the comp to see how many of this year's Auckland finalists have appeared previously.

There are 16 finalists in Auckland this year. Of those 13 have appeared in Auckland finals previously in the last few years. (And of course many in national finals.)

The only teams that I haven't identified being repeat finalists from the last few years are Black History Fortnight, Mexico, and Little Island Films.

NB. I'm not sure about name changes. For instance I think it's fair to say Asylum is Haynesfilm/OW, and my hunch is that Egg Hut was previously known as Egg House. Also, one of this year's finalists had previously won best score but wasn't otherwise a "general" finalist, but I've included them.

It's pretty ridiculous when you look at the numbers.

Only a few hours to go now... The E! Fashion Channel is currently screening three hours of live coverage of the red carpet at The Palms, as the Christchurch 48HOURS glitterati arrive... See! dmanthei's luscious beard, plaited into the likeness of an Apee; Behold! Mister Strang dressed in a Lady Gaga-inspired suit made entirely of steak-and-cheese pies; Baffle! at UN-observer themorgan dressed Bjork-style as a giant red ball.
