Awesome! And the reviews have started. I'm super pleased to see ADHDMi up there, I feared that nobody would like their film but me ;-)

'Dead Meat' was also exceptionally strong and YOFO's Paranormal Printivity was a dark-horse masterpiece. Tonight was the best time I've spent getting a splitting headache for three weeks!

Just wondering how the audience voting for the best film goes...is it done straight after the screening? Who has the right to vote? Also is that right that those teams which dont win the audience award are not qualified for any other awards?

in reply to Camerastylo:

From previous years, you get given a piece of paper that you can write 1, 2 or 3 next to whatever films are your favourites, and everyone in the theatre at the time got to vote.
I could be wrong but I don't think the audience awards have any technical effect on the rest of the judging. One which wasn't an audience favourite might go through, and vice-versa. But a more official person would be better to say if I'm wrong or right :D

Audience Favourites do three things:

Win the love of the crowd
Win a Order of Filmheads certificate
And most importantly are highlighted in the judging rounds.

my team got people's choice (audience #1) in 2009 and 2010 and didn't make the auckland final. 2011 came runner up or 3rd in our heat and made auckland finals...go figure.

A little elaboration please.

I was led to understand that the audience favourite bit had no bearing on the judging process and the judges awarded points (or what ever) on the merits they see or fail to see in the films and are not influenced by any external reaction from the audience or anyone else or have I misunderstood what you're saying.

I'll leave it at that thanks.
Not going down this road again.
Will just reiterate that they don't have any 'weight' in the final judging process.

Judges are influence by all sorts of things tho.
The type of filmmaking they prefer
The people they may or may not know involved with the film.
How they're feeling when they watch the film
How they feel about the actors in the film
An aversion to the subject matter.

You'd hope they aren't but who's to know what goes on inside the brain of a judge. The could be sociopaths for all we know!

As with everything with you Shifty, completely open to your own interpretation :)

I'll take that as a compliment Ant, well that's my interpretation :)

It was though a serious question. pretty amazing that huh.

I'm not one of the expect to win brigade, just one of the hope to do well lot

Looks like I might just have to save up for a trip to Auckland and introduce you to my sister. :)))))))))

Don't worry not trying to start an arguement over it..

Here's my take:
It's clear that any film with more buzz around it will get more attention. Winning audience favourite might create a little additional buzz. But it's a little bit of a popularity contest, rather than a judgement of the true merits of a short, so while it gets a little more attention, it doesn't earn a short any actual points.

It seems simple enough.

in reply to Shifty:

The judges are presumably going to end up with a shortlist before Ant locks them all in a room to fight it out. I'm guessing that they'll take another look at the list of Audience Favourites to see if there's any they should perhaps take another look at before finalising that shortlist.

There's really no point, however, trying to read too much into the judging process - fundamentally it's mostly subjective. There are obviously objective measures (did it get the required elements right - although even that's somewhat subjective - and is it the right length) but beyond that it's going to be a lot about taste and opinion about what's good and what's not.

You might not be aware of this, given how many audience faves you've won, but it's a fucken weird part of the contest. Either Bricks Quest is great, or Dogs Breakfast is one of those teams you see rolling in taking up 2 full rows. Hope we don't have any teams like that in my heat tonight, spoils the fun.

Nah, Audience favourites means nothing in terms of finals. I loved Bricks Quest, it was my pick for second place, and Open, Closed doors my pick for third, but I thought you were a shoe in for first....
