I think audience fave has its place, but should be taken with a grain of salt. Our team didn't get top three, so it's pretty disappointing but I am not letting it get me down too much. Our team is basically unknown, and it seems the trend is that teams with big names take it out, regardless of if they are actually the best. Not bitching about not getting the nod (not even 3rd!? - fuck!) but it's just my take on it.

Yes, but I feel like if the judging was up to people who consistently watch all the films every year, I personally think their films would look same same after a while compared to lots (if not most) of the other teams who every year bring a new style, and new look.

I disagree I think if a film really doesn't place in the top 3 then theres probably a good reason why, and some of it has to come down to teams being honest and not stacking there supporters and then on top of that telling them not to vote for that team just because they know someone. I'm in a small team and every year we hardly have any supporters come, not that feeling sucks when you see other teams come in with huge supporters and lots of howling etc. Audience favs to stay I say, it doesnt mean much but a nice way of letting 2nd and 3rd place getters they're on the right track

Audience favs are exactly that: The favourites of the audience.
Not: Best V48 Film of the Heat, nor Our Pick for the Finals.

What makes a favourite? The one you like the most, not necessarily the best, funniest, scariest, whatever, just the intangible 'favourite'.

Is that your own? Possibly, I mean, why make a movie you don't like?

As a team leader, I have never, will never tell my team which way to vote. Its their vote, just as its mine. If they choose to vote for their own team, sweet, if not, sweet.

But I like the intangibility of Audience Favourite. No justification, just 1, 2, 3.

Ok so you disagree but then state that it happens and give examples of it occuring ... confusing much?

You have to always take Audience votes with a grain of salt, as well as reviews, because haters will always want to hate.

It just always amazes me when you walk out and overhear people bagging a film because they had 4 times the crew they did, they had better gear, better resources, etc... Not actually bagging the film ... just hating.

Thankfully 48 hour isn't just based around the audience vote.

But it always gives me the shits when you see films that have so many gaping holes in them reach the top 3 ... and it happens time and time again.

Perhaps if the exact count of votes were published we could actually see how many lamers throw away votes in order not to rate it honestly...

Just a thought.

There's no need to overthink it. Some people will be douchebags, but let's not let their behaviour define our response to everyone?

I'm fairly certain most people vote honestly - likely for their own team first, but maybe not. And I'd say almost always for the second and third favourite as exactly that.

In the counting they (I assume) allocate 3-points for a 1st place pick, 2-points for 2nd and 1-point for 3rd. So even if everyone votes for their own team first, the other votes are likely to even it out.

I believe in the past various people involved in the counting have confirmed that most people seem to vote honestly and that the result usually represents what seemed to be the consensus of the audience.

I have to say I stopped the 48 hour many years ago and only started back in the last few years, because of a group I was in (who thankfully don't exist or compete anymore) was instructed to vote for our film 1st and the worst one 2nd and the next worst one 3rd ... after actually doing what I was told like a good warm prop I just stopped playing.

But why not see how everyone is ranked? I don't really see much harm in it? But that's just my 2 cents ...

And maybe some of this is still Idol BS carry over ... I mean really America!? :P

I was saying I disagree with you in that I think the audience favs should stay, but acknowledge that yes the old vote for your own team no matter what does occur, that is what I don't agree with ... I guess theres no real way to combat that it just comes down to people being honest, I know from the 3 heats that I've watched the results are quite fair ... your past team sounds like a bunch of tossers

I'd have to disagree and say that the projector is under-exposing this year. Out film looked exposed properly at home, but came off very dark on the projector in the academy. And I've seen many films that are clearly overexposed and yet still had some crushed blacks in the same frame.

But it's definitely hard to judge what's going to look good at home and what's going to look good on the projector.

By the way, loved your guys film this year. And he DOES look a lot like Johnny Depp.

I was there to see and hear one film and only one just because it was on the Silver screen. It's funny to see everyone taking it so seriously, it's supposed to be fun!!! And the other reason was to hear an original song written in 6 hours by Hip Hop artist Big Freshh. MIMIC and Nume did well to keep audience's attention during the minute and half end of the world kaos audio montage and drew them into the film with the simple technique of one camera shot. Then the reiteration of the film's serial killer twist through the song was awesome too!!! No votes tonight for best in heat. Oh well!! I guess that's what you expect!!! Choice!!!

Ahh we were wondering if the short was really just a way to get exposure for the rap artist at the end of the clip. Def had the best audio of the night! Few funny moments in the actual film too.

I figured he was just making excuses for his short being super overexposed.

How exactly do you think those teams got those big names?

Most of the teams that keep coming up in the comp do so because they're consistently better than the others.

Just think, even if it was completely random you still probably wouldn't get it, 'cos you'd still only have about an 8% chance of hitting first.

even if you haven't been chosen as a crowd favourite placegetter, when do you find out when the Auckland final is?

The Auckland final is on June 2nd whether you're an audience favourite or not.

Do you mean when do you find out if you're a finalist or not? Should be Wednesday.
