I agree about the forums being a little calmer and quieter this year....where are all the epic flame wars? Wheres the traditional bitching about professional vs amateur teams? Wheres that one guy, you know the one, who makes a film that noone understands or likes and he spends a 20 page thread arguing with people about it?

I miss those.

I feel maybe its because the forum isn't being used that much this year. The problem is that there are too many places to discuss 48 hours (twitter, facebook, this forum etc...) so the discussion is being spread out instead of centralized in the forum.

2013 (Wellington) - Parasite - The Robot/Cyborg/Android Movie

Maybe splitting it between reviews/ facebook / twitter/ forums has just spread it out everywhere! Could be people are lurking and no ones saying anything truly contentious.

Quality of story or production value?

Unfortunately I've only been able to get to our heat and the one before it so can't really comment about the rest of the comp, but I thought our heat was pretty strong but the one before only had one film that I thought was really any good.

This is what happens Ant when the trifector of bullshit is told to shut the hell up. :)

I dunno, everyone want a dollar each way. Next year spot me a ticket to Auckland and I'll give you something to talk about.. :)

Oh and while I'm at it how about spreading the grand final around the country a bit. If the Embassy in Welly is good enough for Sir Pete then it should be good enough for Lord Ant. I reckon Baron Froggie and some serf from the Cantab cultural wasteland could host it as well.
Oamaru has just spent 12 million restoring the magnificent Victorian Opera house in the middle of town, If the NZ Ballet Company says it's now up to world standard and perform there then it's good enough for this and I tell you now the place would be full to capacity and no the capacity isn't 15 seats.

Getting contentious enough for you:)

Oh wait I've got another.. (as always) :)))))

Nah save that one for another time :)

But I guess you wanted contentious comments about the films but then you didn't specifically stipulate did you Ant. :)))))))))
specifics Bob, specifics .. there you go line from a well know film name it! HA!

See a warning to all ( in case you're not so thick to have not spotted it by now) Give a size 10 Shifty a size 5 hole to jump into and jump he will.
Bloody double negatives, give me a good compound adjective everytime, much sexier in bed.

well I'd better get back to finishing this bloody script, lordy lordy lordy what a marathon it's turned out to be but thanks Ant for the oppurtunity to flex my crap chat muscles. :)))

Yeah move the final around.
Bring back the Trifecta of BS.

I think the arguments will start once the finalists are announced and everyone can bitch about who got through and who missed out and amateur vs pro, beards vs hats, whether having a tree in the background is using a leaf as a prop (obviously its NOT), and why Hira is so special.

Based on the audience voting, the more polished teams seem to be coming to the fore again. This is nothing against the other teams, but i thought 2010 and 2011 saw a high standard compared to previous years. Have to agree that from what i have seen so far, 2012 is a step back and i think the cream will rise more swiftly to the top in 2012.

I can hazard a guess at the top 3 or 4 teams this year, certainly in terms of the Auckland City Finalists.

I could be wrong, but there seems to have been an increase in school teams this year and while some of the stories (the ones i have seen) are well thought out and crafted, their production values will rarely match those of the more 'seasoned' campaigners with enviable access to cutting edge equipment and post production facilities.

Just my view, but this year the gap between the good, the bad and the indifferent will be wider. Story is king, development of character is key and sharp editing are the standoutingredients in this competition. Quality will always prevail and while new entrants and the school community should be carefully nurtured and encouraged as the 'future of film making' in New Zealand, I think that 2 distinct streams are now evident in this competition, the haves and have nots.

That being said, i love this competition. To have a platform to display this love of film making in a unique way such as this is something we should all embrace and i hope it lives long. Roll on 2013!

Well speaking as someone who went and watched every single Auckland heat it 2010, which became a mindnumbing struggle to keep up. And as someone who has visited every second heat this year.

I have to say that the quality has risen significantly. The first heat I went to was heat 2, where nearly every single film felt like a potential finalist I was worried that I was going to drown in the competition. As I have seen in the heats to come however that not every heat is full of finalists, but this is a grand improvement from 2010 where 3 out of 4 teams had no story, bad sound and very poor production values.

I have noticed that 90% of teams are using DSLR cameras now, which has both raised and lowered the video quaality significantly. Sure we are seeing much more depth of field and some amazing shots, and much less grain. But I'll be damned if I've seen more than 10 teams that actually know how to use these cameras. I'm sure the old cameras people used to use had some better automatic appetuear settings and I am surely missing autofocus.

Many teams are coming up with some good stories and good dialogue, but are let down by out of focus shots, and inconsistent lighting and colour. DSLR cameras (the 7D at least) have a tendancy to appear darker on the LCD screen than they do in the final product, and as a result of such we are seeing A LOT of overexposed films this year. Also many teams have not practised their focus pulling, as I have seen several shorts where they have tried to pull focus, missed and tried again.

But in terms of story and use the given elements, and even framing I, personally have seen a great improvement. I do agree though that the boards, where most of the action has seen to be centred in previous years, seems to be a graveyard this year.
