Hi, bit off topic but I was just wondering how it works with the judges, do they watch every film at the heats and make their pics from that or do they just get shown the audience faves? Do you have to be an audience fave to be considered as a finalist?

Typically at least one of the city judges will attend each heat and they will make a shortlist. The larger group of judges will basically view shortlist picks and judge from there.

Audience favourite is just that - the audience favourite. It has absolutely no impact on overall judging at all.

in reply to Michael Buhagiar:

Wow. Don't mean to throw more fuel on the fire, but those are some pretty bold statements.

I thought our film was entertaining (Half Shell), but the top three all deserved to be there. Haynesfilm are consistently at the top for one main reason - they deliver the goods. This year was no different. Personally loved their film, along with idiotvision's and ibeard's.

Kudos to the consistently good teams I say, gives the amateurs (myself included) a bar to aim for.

Half Shell Productions:
Rialto 48 Hours 2014 - Siren's Call (Time Travel)
Rialto 48 Hours 2013 - 17:09 (Techno Thriller) - Best Makeup (Auckland), Finalist Best Makeup (National)
V48 2012 - Finger Bang (Action) - Best Script (Auckland), Finalist Best Script (National)
V48 2011 - Best Foot Forward (Rom Com)
V48 2010 - Love Game (Sports)

Previous Teams:
V48 2009 - Little Death (Musical)
V48 2008 - Misconceptions (Romance)
V48 2007 - Grind World (Grindhouse)
V48 2006 - Monster Within (Monster)

I know the city finalists are announced on the 3rd (for AK), but does that include other awards like make up, teen team, best bad film etc? When are they announced?

Cheers

In response to Truthserum and Michael Buhagiar, I wonder if your opinions are symptomatic of NCEA? Just because you participate does not mean you achieve. Nor is your film any more or less valid relational to your experience. If your film is shit you're not going to get a pass for being a first timer. Rename your team so you land in another heat which is not as hotly contested if you feel so hard done by, though adversely you'd miss out on being in a heat that was almost guaranteed to be great.

I wish I had come along to Heat 9, I was even invited and politely declined in favour of bed -.-

2011 urban etikit - Fad - actor, story
2009 Little Death - Musical - second unit
2007 Some Like it Smokin Hot IX - Unnecessary Sequel - actor, story
2006 OCDental Death - Crime - writer, director, editor
2005 Animal Lovers Guide to Loving Animals - Action - actor, story

in reply to Michael Buhagiar:

Hey Micheal
I think amateurs do have a fair chance in the 48, my team iBeard is an amateur team, none of us work in any kind of film/media industry, and we solely enter the competition for the the fun of it. Our process is normally get pissed on the Friday and concept some crazy shit, then film it. (this year we had a better camera and hired a light kit which makes shit look good)

as you can see from our first film Open to suggestion we slowly got better.

So please don't give up and think there's a conspiracy, the teams in our heat I thought did a great job. I'm surprised that ours came second and the fact that we're not banned from the 48 yet. I look forward to see your team entry next year.

Peace
Dev

Ok, so I think these are my top 10 for auckland, I didn't know where else to post them, and it was really really hard (Started with a list of 25 that I loved and had to tearfully cut it down). I think I only picked ones that weren't disqualified, let me know if I messed up somewhere.

Sinistral - John (One Room)
Roger Harper Experience - Let's Be Friends (Crime)
Idiotvision - Headshot (One Room)
Clinky - RoboRevenge (Revenge)
Shonky Productions - 48 Hours (Mystery)
Haynesfilm.Ow - Stuck in the Mini with You (Road)
Chorizo Del Toro - Mr Ree (Mystery)
Lens Flare - Copy That (Road)
Bald Faced Cheek - Choir in the Blood (Musical or Dance)
Touche Mailballs - Rodney (Fad)

Best disqualified:
We'll Change this Later - A letter to a Samurai (Quest)

Bear in mind it's only my opinion, and I'm human so I will like some genres better than others and some films better than others, so don't take this as a finals list or anything, just my opinion. Anyone else have a top 10 or similar from the heats they saw if they saw several?

in reply to Ant Timpson:

Hey Ant,

Apologies to you, clearly I had blurred vision from misleading comments. Just to clarify I love this event really enjoy it and appreciate all the hard work you do in organising it. I feel a little embarrassed for having a pop at you in a hot headed moment.

To be fair I never expected us to get in the Top 3 but really did think the dudes from Half Shell deserved more credit.

Thanks again for organising such a fun event and please do accept my apology.

Michael
