Fistfull of Crime

A tough cop with some slight (well, giant screaming skull face that constantly flies around) mother issues interviews a suspect in relation to a murder case. Having advised the suspect that he's capable of doing the good cop/bad cop thing all night, we are treated to a couple of pretty graphic confessions, one involving a horse and a urethra, or something along those lines. Of course everything gets topped off with a David Carradine CSI put the glasses on 'oh yeah!' scream moment, and Jesus. The animation was pixellated brain candy mess yet again from The Avatards, and the warped humour was definitely my cup of tea. Awesome.

Bonus points for Ghost Mother. She's a Mother and a Ghost. Awesome.

When I first saw this title on the voting form, I wondered whether they were aware they spelled "fistful" incorrectly. By the time their short had finished, I was convinced they knew exactly what they were doing (although I'm not entirely sure I did). Hilariously animated to the point of seisure (no, not literally), this film was an assault on the senses that I couldn't help but fall for. A murder has occured and Bobby Young may know more than he's letting on; like for instance, how he punched the guy in the face repeatedly and trod on the corpse using a horse. While trying to get to the bottom of this, the detective converses with the skull of his ghost mother. Or something. Enjoyed the karaoke Ghost Mother song at the end with the crucified Jesus. Yep. That is a sentence I just typed. I guess this one just needs to be seen.

A warped glimpse into some bizarre glitchtopia where a crime scene is presented to our big nosed shaman detective by the suspected killer, Davey. A great appearance by the stunning blonde screen starlet Ghost Mother, looking as good as she was when she was last alive 500 years ago. An extremely catchy soundtrack hopefully available for download soon, can't wait for the remixes! "Ghost Mo-ther... she's a ghost and a mo-ther!" Great cameo by Jesus also.

This is the second year we've been in the same heat as the avatards. And this year's movie was like the last but _more_: more streamlined, more psychadelic, more innapropriate, and more more. Not my cup-of-tea, but, something.

I guess this really isn't my kind of film. The non-sequitur style and general weirdness of the film put me off. The humour was hit and miss and it just felt kind of like it was trying a little too hard to use the animation to cover up for not really having a direction. Still - I can't fault Ghost Mother. We were singing that song after the heat, so the hits definitely outweighed the misses.

Tight script, good length, unique look, loads of laffs, and great to see some serious animation outside of team logos. Theme song is incredible! I can't get it out of my head, even if I wanted too. If the Avatards had a Ghost Mother tee-shirt I'd buy one... Come on, merch it up guys. "Ghost Mother! She's a ghost and a mo-ther!"
