Projector Issue in Memorial Theatre (Wellington)

i think color space should be included in the technical rules next year.

specifically whether the hand in quicktimes should be full gamut rgb or rec 709, cause i don't think that was clear.

i bet most people hand in full gammut rgb (0-235) (including us) and of course when played on a projector calibrated for rec 709 (16-235) that will have a bad gamma shift and look way too dark and crushed.

xyz is only relevant to dcp files, so that shouldn't be anything?

if it was an rgb or 709 to xyz thing the issue would be way worse than just a gamma shift or being too dark - the colors would actually be totally different. you would know.

rec 709 is a broadcast standard but would look washed out on a computer screen.

Rule Changes from last year - the short version for returning teams

in reply to Craig:

2. Music - Big Bang & Fuzz are back but no Loop or Arch Hill.

is that the case?

at http://www.48hours.co.nz/2013/help/?ss=music

it says...

This year joining our old Music Partner in crime LOOP are two additional New Zealand Music labels who have kindly offered their fantastic artists and music to the 48HOURS. These labels are offering thousands of tracks for use within 48HOURS.

Blowing the budget on Catering

Without a doubt, year after year, we spend more money on catering than anything else.

But I honestly don't mind. You're not allowed to pay your crew so good catering is a way of respecting them for their skills and their time.

Plus when people know they're going to be fed well it keeps them coming back year after year ;)

2013 - Hints & Tips from the Vets

I wrote this a few years ago for Take magazine...

Five tips <3 from Hybrid Motion Pictures!

1. HAVE FUN!

It HAS to be about having fun with your friends. As soon as you forget that and start taking the competition and/or yourself too seriously, you've already lost - regardless of where you come. Bring the LOLs!

2. Be prepared

Make sure you have your cast and crew fully briefed before the weekend itself. Build a database of cinematic locations and props that you have access to as a team. Writing your script on the weekend around the resources you have available is ideal, rather than setting scenes in obscure locations only to lose half a shoot day trying to find them!

3. Focus on the Sound of your short

More often than not, viewers will tolerate bad pictures as long as the sound is good quality. Great pictures with shrill sound, however, can cause walk-outs at screenings. If you spend money on one thing, rent some decent sound gear and have a member of your team who knows how to use it.

4. Make a schedule, and make it backwards

Make a schedule by starting at the finishing deadline and working your way backwards. By "reverse engineering" your weekend you know exactly how much time you have for each part of your weekends workflow. Remember to give yourself leeyway around each part of the process: when budgeting your time, under-sell and over-deliver!

5. Feed the troops...

...and feed them WELL. Minimise junk food intake, keep it healthy. Find out in advance if any crew members have any special dietary requirements or allergies. Preparing low GI food will keep people full and their energy levels up for longer. In combination with the LOLs, great NOMS can get people to do anything!

2012 AUCKLAND WINNERS

yeah pretty sure the only cut in lense flare's was the camera flash out of the slomo and that the rest of the transitions were done panning a light in and out of the window.

2012 AUCKLAND WINNERS

first finals in a long time where i thought each and every film deserved to be there.

the fact lense flair didn't win best cinematography for that exquisitely blocked one-shot masterpiece blows my mind. can't wait to see grand chaval's entry if it's better that that - it must be something pretty special!

unfortunately thought the lene flair script was pretty weak this year (that's after thinking they got robbed last year). 150% respect to the execution but as a rounded short on the whole thought it was not all that.

del sur's was phenomenal and what a fucking performance from the lead!! and the adhdmi cinemagraph short was something special too.

personally tho, i honestly thought thedownlowconept's movie was one of the best short films i've ever seen, inside or outside of the competition.

my picks would have been

1. thedownlowconcept
2. del sur
3. adhdmi

and lense flair for best cinematography

it's such a subjective thing tho and the overall standard of the night was pretty epic inspiration.

also special mention to big black snake and the one with the bad wizard (sorry can't remember it's name) i had a massive grin ear to ear through both of those too :D

2012 AUCKLAND V48 FINALISTS

how i understand it is that each of the awards are specific to sponsors. i.e. best female director award exists because wift offers an award for it to exist. best cinematography exists because it is sponsored by canon etc. i'm sure if envy or park road said to ant that they wanted to specifically offer a reward for best use of sound or best sound design then the award would exist :) i'm most interested about the best editing award to be honest... am i mistaken or is that a new one this year?
