Christchurch City Finalists + Award Nominees 2014

in reply to Rowox:

I love the promo video that Chch gets each year, I wish Wgtn (and the other cities for that matter) got the same treatment.

it's not fair to expect ordinary humans to live up to andrew todd.

Writing team

If it means anything, our writing seems to go along similar lines to Dylan's. We let the whole team brainstorm together over dinner and beers and I think this part is important because it lets everyone feel like they have been a part of the creation of the film from the beginning. The whole weekend is always better if everyone on the team feels like they have ownership over the project. After 20-30 minutes though, we lock away our 3 dedicated writers away to bang out the actual shooting script. We never let more than 3 people into that script writing process.

Auckland Audience Awards 2014

in reply to funboy:

That's totally fine I reckon - I've gone to a few heats that aren't my own already.

The Crystal Palace has a pretty huge capacity and as far as I know so far no heat has been fully packed.

In saying that, if you do go along to another heat and it is packed out - it'd be a bit stink not to give your seat to people who do have a film in that heat. Just be a GC about it.

Sound at the Crystal Palace

This is an issue every year. Most people working in TV with a knowledge of sound mixing will make the true peak levels around -9dbTP, but for cinemas you usually mix closer to 0.

And people who don't know anything about sound mixing will just have their peaks hitting 0 by default.

So it makes sense that teams with people who have a background in mixing for TV shows or TVCs will have considerably lower levels next to most of the films.

It might be good to add a guideline (definitely not a disqualifiable rule, just a guideline) in the technical FAQ of where people should be mixing to.

What I learned this year

We ideally wrap shooting Saturday evening, maybe with some pickups Sunday morning.

We always aim to lock the edit by 11am Sunday morning but usually it's closer to 12.30.

Sound mix and grade can happen concurrently from then to delivery.

A rough cut on Saturday is way too early but a rough cut at 4pm Sunday is definitely way too late.

What I learned this year

they're more tv genres than film genres. personally i want to come out of the weekend with a short film that can hopefully stand on it's own outside of the context of the comp. that's a short film, not a scene from a bad tv show.

one year there was drama - which i guess would be the corresponding genre - but lots of people complained that it was too broad, which i guess it kind of is since really, every other genre that isn't doco comes under it.

Failure rate?

We were on a laptop this year and it took 13 minutes. Anything over 20 minutes and something is really wrong!

April 48hours? Better or worse?

We were definitely a lot less prepared this year, however I prefer the new April shooting weekend regardless.

Almost every other year the weather has been awful and that has had a truly massive impact on the films and it makes scheduling the shooting really difficult.

Good weather is so, so important.

I reckon as long as they keep it in April, people will be much more prepared next year. People always complain about change - next year once people are more used to it I reckon the benefits will seem a lot more obvious.

The great 2014 Poster thread!

When we drew it I was actually really excited 'cause I've been so in love with the new Muppets movie since it came out and felt like it was an opportunity to get that out of my system, but the process ended up being way more complicated that I could have possibly imagined. I really don't have a musical bone in my body. We were still shooting at midday on Sunday which we've never ever done before. So stoked with the finished product though :D

Did you pre-record guide tracks or record songs on set?
