48 Hours to Shoot, Edit, ...Flow

in reply to videoamp1969:

I concur.
You need them all of Saturday, including the night (in case your script requires a night shot), plus till at least midday on Sunday (for pick-ups- which you want to avoid, but if you need to...)

Plan to sleep and eat. I know there are some maniacs out there who don't sleep at all, but your brain won't function without it. Even if its a few hours on each night (I aim for at least 5).

We pick a place that has some flexibility and then we write for that location, no matter what.

in reply to LindenFilm:

We usually shoot then edit.
We have in the past downloaded during the day and have removed the rubbish, but not an edit as such.

Strongly recommend a location scout with ALL the writers before the weekend. You need to know where you're shooting.

What we do:
Brainstorm and write on the Friday night. We usually finish around 1-2am. I know some finish earlier and others are still going around 4-5am.

Saturday: Meet early, film, film film. Try to get footage to the editor to delete the crap and start to put a timeline together.
We normally finish around 5-7pm (depending on the script)

Edit like demons on the Saturday night. Have a rough cut done by the time you sleep.

Sunday: Up early and trim the film, sound and music added. Pick-ups if needed (but these really suck the time and should be avoided)

I try and finish by 4pm, to allow 3 hours of fix it time.

2014? What do we want from the comp?

in reply to LindenFilm:

For this genre they had an option. I forget what it was, but there was an out.

2014? What do we want from the comp?

in reply to CraigWB:

Oooh, like a Witi Ihimaera category.

I've heard that Stephen King offers some of his stories very cheap ($1 is the number in my head) to new film makers. I could be wrong on this, but it rings a bell. Imagine the 'Stephen King' genre!

I think adapted Shakespeare would be awesome!

in reply to themorgan:

I didn't see any decent Grindhouse from a few years ago. Can anyone think of one I should check out?

I do agree with you though- the genre doesn't matter, unless it has unique demands (like period drama would).

If 'Shakespeare' was a genre you could always simply modernise it.

Although, I do 'fear' musical for the reason that Linden suggests- it places so much emphasis on that one component. But hey ho, if I get it, I get it and just have to do the hard yards and make it a kick-ass one.

Since our 48 hour comp has turned into a 49 hour one, what's the bet on a 'time travel' genre this year?

Or would this be considered a 'Big Twist'?

What "filmmaking related" websites do you follow?

in reply to LindenFilm:

I have a friend who attended and he loved it- but this was about 5 years ago.
It is quite expensive from what I recall, but he did get a lot out of it.
I'd hit them up for a tour and ask to speak to some current students. If you're going to be forking out for a course you have the right to know what to expect.

2014? What do we want from the comp?

in reply to Craig:

I think that films that present a strong example of the genre should be rewarded.

One that nods in the direction of the genre should be taken with a larger grain of salt.

Having said that, with genres like One Shot (which I thought was awesomely done) are either spot on or not. In these cases its how well they work the exploit the genre for the maximum effect, which in essence is what I mean with a 'strong example.'

TOTALLY agree that the rules page needs a massive tidy up. This has been mentioned on here for the last couple of years....
