Non V48 but i need to vent, you lot copped the short straw

Hey Shifty, I've got some software of you want. Most of what you need judging from your list. Cheers.
Yeah, another Quake, kinda changes all your priorities. I've got family down there and it's a bloody worry every time. Makes the thought of making movies and all the bitching seem really trivial.... which of course it is!!!

Auckland City Finalists discussion?

in reply to Vanessa Cater:

Totally agree with you.
Very plain concept which they turned into a quirky, strange and different film.
I thought that's what 48 was about.
But I'm not a judge and they obviously thought others were better... not having seen any of the others (except Mukpuddy) I can't comment on their mindset.
But, well done Sinistral... loved the ending!!!

Wildcards - which group are these selected from?

in reply to Shifty:

Shifty - you are the basis for a very good film.
Much like "Being John Malkovich" except instead of the experience of being him for a short period of time, the Shifty movie would be reality based on how long players can exist in your mind before going insane.
Of course, it's rather a moot pitch for a film because the winner would be stapped into a strait jacket while drooling... Shifty...shhiffffftty....I'm a little teapot, short and stout...shifteeeeeeearghhhh!!!! (I do jest) ;)

John

Quirky and a wee bit strange.... really liked it. Loved the lack of dialogue and the ending fitted it perfectly. Camera angles and the editing was great. What a let down that you didn't make the finals. Do something different, the 48 mantra and when you do...??? Great consistency with 48 - or do I mean inconsistent???

Can Actors get nominated if their film wasn't a finalist?

We didn't make the Auckland finals this year, but some of our actors were superb. I mean, really, bloody good.
So..... can they be nominated or do they pay the price for the film failing in other areas.
Plus our visuals and sound design were very good, so can you get nominated for cinematography, score and the "sexiest" short as well?
Cheers.

Is it just me?

in reply to John:

... I can see where you're coming from... but where's the fun in beating teams that aren't at he same level as you are. Kinda like taking candy from a baby. No offence intended towards those teams in other smaller regions.
Creativity pops up all over the country. But seriously, the Auckland finals last year... very, very GOOD!!!!!

Auckland City Finalists discussion?

in reply to Michael McLachlan:

Thanks for that. We got the "sexiest looking short" the year before. We seem to be going backwards ( I jest....I think??? )
Have you any links to your work? and do you only work with your brother as a team? Also... are you submitting this year for the Fresh Shorts? as I'm looking for a Producer, an experienced one.
I Produce and write, but writing's my passion. If you're interested I'll send you the script and as this isn't quite the forum for such things would you post your email address. Cheers.
PS. Only joking about the "brown nose" I don't do that for anyone for any reason!!!

Auckland City Finalists discussion?

in reply to Michael McLachlan:

Good on you!!! Unfortunately we need the commissions dollars. Hate relying on people who I don't know and have never even seen any of the work they've produced.
Might be the year I have to do the humble, brown nose bit and go along and introduce myself etc.
I mean, our works damn good (except this year we tanked) ran out of time and what we had just didn't come together. That's 48 for ya!!! and everyone's in the same boat.
If you have time, have a look at our last years entry. I warn you now....It's serious.
2010 was a good year of shorts. The Auckland finals last year were better than the Nationals... I'm assuming that's why the rules have been changed.
I'm halfway through a script to submit to the mighty commish...aghh....hate having to do the film com thing...JUST SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!!! and let me get on with it.

Auckland City Finalists discussion?

in reply to Michael McLachlan:

I love writing Drama but then I'm long in the tooth and have led a rather colourful life!!! They do say, write what you know ;)
The sort of comedy I like is "Black Books" and I don't think I could ever pull off anything half as funny... who am I kidding, a fifth, a tenth... no... I just can't write comedy. I find it's more of a personal thing.
I killed myself over "Death at a Funeral" (the British one) and I know people who just didn't get it???? I mean, who on earth doesn't get that movie? I actually had a stomach ache when I left the theatre from laughing so much.
But give me "Shutter Island" - now there's a Psychological Drama!!! but also taken from a book. Dennis Le Hane also wrote Mystic River which Clint directed.
The yanks (apologies in advance to all the Americans out there) seem to write the same movie over and over again, the only thing different is the cast.
When they get a box office hit - they do 4 sequels and then start on the prequels. Sorry if I've offended anyone... but it is what it is!!!

What is the point of Short Films?

.... also, I would have loved to have seen some of the other heats. But, then again, they would have been the heats containing some of my favourite teams. In that regard... I'm as guilty as everybody else who stick to what they know. The thing is... when you branch out from the usual, you can be surprised by the unknown.

What is the point of Short Films?

in reply to Craig Parkes:

Our team had lots of people who wanted to come to "our premiere" but I was following the cast and crew only rule. I didn't know it had been rescinded. Obviously My Bad!!!
