Reviews

Really interesting to read most of the reviews coming through on the site. Steelpotato as usual is a legend.

I do want to rip the heads off of those, however, who use the review site to:

a) Defend their films
b) Provide general disclaimers
c) Have a go at a reviewer
d) Tell us what a great time they had making their film (CHCH team guilty of this)
e) Review a film that hasn't even screened yet (CHCH teams guilty of this)
f) Do one or more of the above and still rate the film! (5 stars in some cases!)

All of this is happening already! Use the forums if you want to have a bitch or tell us how great 48HOURS is.

The Review Site is for reviews is it not? And it's a fantastic resource!

Time to take a pill...

Yep, personal attacks are so lovely aren't they?

"Not sure about Stealpotato's rating 6/10 (the most prolific reviewer! Who are you anyway??)"

Guess its a shame the old forum has gone, people must think I'm new or something and haven't watched/reviewed every Wellington film since 2007 lol

And the ratings can't be directly compared against other films. I'm assessing the film solely based on what it sets out to achieve. It could well be that something which I give 3/5 is actually a 'better' film than something I give 4/5.

I can't seem to grasp what people see is different between the comments they leave and the star rating they give.
i.e. One review is completely negative and yet they give the team 7/10. Then that same person reviewing really enjoys another teams video and showers them with praise and gives them 3/10.

Maybe they have the whole system back to front and think that a good film should have a low rating.... i don't know. I have given up hope on audience reviews. Bring on the Judges thoughts, then we will know what we really need to work on.

Mista Teas:

To respond to your review of Gary's big Gorilla Adventure...

That WAS me and my brutal spartan beard! I sat out of 48hours this year, but sunday morning Logan rang and asked if he could film at my place. I said, "sure" then he asked if i had a camera, pirate jacket, a flickie and a pizza pan he could use. Again, "sure!". He showed up and said "ok, hand me the camera and put on the jacket" and suddenly I had joined his team. ha!

I had no clue what was going on. The only line i actually said was "if ye can find it". Everything else was VO, so I was totally blind. We shot like 10-15 minutes of him telling me to dig a hole over there, look sad, etc. and that was it. I was surprised that it cut together into something that made sense, much less into something 2 reviews said had amazing production value. ha!

I suppose its accurate to say i was in a team of former apee winners, but I wouldn't say i was "messing with" anyone so much as having a very brief cameo.

In saying that, I'm both proud AND horrified to have been in the "sequel to Death of Brian". ha! Cheers for the reviews!

Ha! Oh, I wasn't suggesting you were responsible for anything on screen at all! When I watched it I actually thought he hasn't been told what this is about or how it's going to be used! Classic!

Good idea in theory but I think having a thread per heat as was done prior to the review DB was better, far less shit back then

Yeah, but then you often got these enormous threads with people doing reviews in different formats. The review site is a hell of a lot tidier.

Really gutted that some of our reviewers are being flamed.

Personally I'm hugely impressed with the quality of the reviews. Especially those reviewers who will (quite kindly) suggest an area that could be worked on to improve a film for next year. I don't think there was that sort of massed, consistent support for all teams back when we were starting out.

So - thanks reviewers for being so awesome. You guys rock more than the trolls could ever understand.

I wasn't expecting the worlds greatest reviews for my film this year but I guess I'm a little miffed that someone reviewed me with 2/10 then went back and wrote another review which elaborated on the original review and gave me 1/10 instead of 2.

There were way less reviews though, but the average quality of the reviews were higher.

My film hasn't played yet so I haven't yet had the onslaught however I have seen what has been written about other films. Give me fewer but more thought out and constructive reviews any day.

Finally done with all the reviews of the heats I sat through.

I brought along a bluetooth keyboard and connected it to my iphone
so I was able to take notes while watching the various films.

Much respect to Mista Teas for tackling the entire Christchurch leg of the competition.
It's a lot of work writing up a review that's more than lip-service.

Been thinking of adding a feature to the reviews DB and would like to float it past you guys, see if it's wanted/need/oh god no nick.

'Creator Comments'
Team members behind a film can add one (or more than one) comment to a film without adding a rating by click 'add creator comment' and entering the email address that was associated with their wrap-up form. Either it's one comment per film and it gets stickied at the top of the reviews (sort of a foreword from the filmmakers) or it's many comments per film and appears in post-date order, and would let creators reply to reviewers without rating their own film. Not sure which yet.

Wouldn't be implemented till next year's comp though.

Thoughts?

do you really want to do this? i can see a can of worms being opened the review page is nice and simple it isn't broken so don't fix it.
but if you do why not have a link from said film to a page for dicussion with no ratings and then a link to the film in the viewing room :)

YouTube has my stuff

the coffee pixie has been freed! yay! all is good in the world. someone please save Nimlin!

Any chance of a review of our film, now it's relisted on the database in the right heat (No 9, yesterday - Film: Beat Around the Bush)? steelpotato, in particular.

It already links to the screening room :)
As for discussion... I think that's possibly a little out of scope (and overkill, I mean, these are 7-minute shorts - what's there to discuss that hasn't been said in the reviews? Aside from the content of the reviews themselves, of course...)

Nick, could you add reviewer nomination icons.. for example when we add a review we could enable icons for our own nominations such as best worst film, "great sound" .. a blimp icon or something.. and great sound track icon etc...

also icons could be scattered to "bad side" and "good side"

then you could count the icons from each side and see who has collected most icons.. ok it might get spammy but perhaps some weighing around on review quality would do for the DB too.. hard to solve that but theres some ideas..

2013 - Battle Royal - Granma's scales [Wellington]
2012 - Loaded Gunn - The Letter / Fantasy [Wellington]
2011 - Bad Idea - The Next Big Thing / Fad Movie [Wellington]
2010 - Lost Sleepers - Giving up the ghost / Ghost movie [Wellington]

One advantage of Creator Comments would be the ability to put up a cast list, which could help reviewers who want to acknowledge particular actors by name.

i would like to see people somehow forced to use real names. i reckon that would do a good job of stopping people being anonymous dicks.

not that we've had anyone be dicks to us this year but it's obviously still a problem on the whole.

I still like the idea of a 'trusted reviewer' type system where people can know if a reviewer is trustworthy. Maybe it could be implemented as a sort of runner up type prize to best reviewer. If these reviews are given more weight they might help offset bad reviews. Also I wouldn't mind offering my email address for those who want to contact me about my reviews
