Do we really have to wait 11 hours to find out who won Christchurch? Someone hurry up and tweet the top 3 - that countdown clock, it mocks me...

I was chasing my son around and trying to console him when he suddenly fell to the floor sobbing because he hadn't won best actress... It started a conversation too long for the floor of a 48 hours final trying to quietly explain the differences between boys and girls.

There were some really nifty pieces this year. None that jumped out to me as "teh winar" but a lot of solid entries. I was completely gobsmacked when we won the city, as I was in the middle of my "we are ALL winners in our own way!" speech when we won the big prize.

here's what I remember from the night (but could be wrong!)

City Winner:
US! woo!

Best Actor:
William Bisset (i had my fingers crossed for Avery, but William earned it.)

Best Actress:
Janice Gray (damn good performance by all the actresses in that piece)

Best Script:
Pretty sure it was Burn the Dog. If thats the one i'm thinking of, it had some very solid humor in there.

Best Cinematography:
We WON! Ok, so Daniel won it, but i did lighting and grip!

Best Editing:
Pretty sure it was corn chip. (awesome piece, btw)

Sexiest short:
I believe half done productions got that one

Best Art direction:
Spooce, Babee!

Original soundtrack:
ME! woo! I'm really stoked with that.

Best Bad film was vault502. If you haven't seen it yet, go now. its awe inspiring.

Best disqualified was TBALC...

Sorry, the rest of them I draw a blank. I was chasing a 4 year old.

Thanks Andrew for a kickass year. Aside from that bloody microphone, it was all top shelf.

And thanks to our team, who all rock. 7 of the 8 of us go to the same church, so sunday should be fun!

Gah. I wanted so bad to hang out after the finals and talk film and bask in glory... Blessing and curse of having a little kid, i suppose.

Cheers ya'll!

Doh! Totally spaced out on runner up. (i was vigorously preparing my son for not winning "the monkey toy")

City runner up was of course Infinite Body Confidence, which was an awesome take on body switch. It also featured one of the most jarring final lines of dialog of any film ever!

Sweet work, Dan. Your extreme lip closeup is etched into our collective consciousness!

I was totally ill prepared to take the top spot and didn't have anything clever to say at the moment.

But a celebratory chocolate bar kept me up most of the night, so i brooded this "longass acceptance speech i wish i had given. This is what I wish I'd said:

---
In 2005 My wife, Regina, and I entered 48 hours with a neighbor who had bought a camcorder. I used a mop handle as a boom pole and was able to get para plastics to donate some colored plex as gels for our work lights. When we made city finals, it started me down a road of buying and building better and better film gear. Fast forward 6 years and not only do i have a dedicated truck for my lighting and grip gear, but gripping and gaffing has become my primary income... all thanks to 48 hours.

I met daniel on trademe when buying after effects from him and soon Dan, Grant and I were making awful church videos. Unwatchable horrible videos, if I'm honest.

In 2006 Daniel started SuspectTV. On his team that year was his girlfriend Caroline, who not only has stuck with him but was recently made a permanent member of SuspectTV when the two were married.

In 2008 SuspectTV created one of the best films of all time ("leg off - like face off but with legs") but through a judging error it didn't make the city finals. However, that 48hour weekend ignited a spark between Grant and team member Mel. The romance blossomed and before long Mel also joined the team permanently when the two were married.

Regina and I had to sit out of 48hours in 2007 because we had a baby due. We seriously considered entering 48hours anyways and abusing the people in our heat by submitting a 7 minute video of a newborn baby just gurgling away.

What blows my mind is that the baby we had to bow out of 48 hours to deliver was nominated for best actor this year, and was the main character in our first big win.

So 48hours has changed my career, forged friendships, united lovers, matched couples and imprinted a huge memory in my son's childhood.

When our actor from last year was unavailable we decided to do it all with three couples and our son. Friends, family and partners, united and bonded by 48hours.

... Plus Steve! He's new this year and sadly we didn't have any single ladies on the crew so if there are any women out there looking for a winning team and also possibly a husband, let us know. Some of his hobbies include filmmaking...

But seriously, We want to thank 48hours for the honor of a win, for challenging us and for enriching our lives in so many extremely surreal ways.

Thank you.

----------------

Woulda been cool if i had said that instead. (sigh)
